Ok guys this is my first time posting. I cannot figure this out. I have a 77 gamefisher 7.5hp. It starts up and idles awesome. If I give it gas it will go for a little while and fall on its face. Ive gone through the carb three times now and ive checked my gas lines. And yes I have the fuel valve open. Any help would be appreciated im at my wits end with this.

Does it increase speed before it dies? Or just cuts off?

It sure sounds like there's a restriction in the fuel somewhere, maybe the float valve is just letting a trickle of gas in. Check the little seat that the valve sits in. Also, does the fuel tank have a vent? That could be plugged.

Another possibility is a bad condenser or coil; it can lose ignition when they get hot.

It does not pick up speed it just dies. Ive replaced all the fuel lines and yes the gas cap has a vent but its not plugged cause gas bubbles out of it. After it dies it starts right back up. If it was a bad coil then it shouldnt start up again if its hot right?

How's the float set? It's supposed to be 11/64ths between float and carb body. When you look at the clip that connects the needle to the float, the open end points to the choke end of the venturi, or it can hang, messing with float movement. Then there's the fuel pump element, aka 'duckbill orientation. When the carb is off, and you're looking at the face of the mopunting flange, the red duckbill slot is supposed to be at 45 degree angle;

I checked the float and it is right. The fuel pump element wasnt at 45degrees so I moved it so it was. I got it started and it is still doing the same thing as before

Is the engine vibrating so hard the Gas is boiling to a froth in the float bowl?
Look at the plug immediately after it stops to see if it's wet (Gas) or dry (no Gas)

It sure sounds like something is blocking that hi-speed jet during high flow.

The plug is wet after running

Hmmm, maybe adjust the high speed to be leaner.

Do you have the correct plug and gap? Almost very used outboard I've bought had the wrong plugs.

What would be the correct plug? The plug in it is an acdelco 435. How would I go about adjusting the high speed jet?

There should be a model number on it, probably something like 217.XXXXXXX

An owner's manual and/or service manual would help a lot. You should be able to find one with a bit of searching.

I think the plug should be an NGK 3332 but I'm not sure

A photo of the Carb would help a lot. Some had two adjusting screws. The Bottom is the Hi speed jet.
The wrong plug can get too hot to fire after working awhile. That would explain the Wet plug.
Too much 'hi speed' jet fuel will cause the engine to quit. Too wet to fire! Back to the Hi speed jet again.

Post two photos for us. One of the Carb so we can see the adjustments. And one good photo of the numbers so there'll be no guessing!

Ok I was searching around for what plug to use in it and on the sears site under the serial number 217585920 which is my motor it said to use champion rj12yc plugs. I put one in and it runs like a champ in a barrel. I cant get it to the lake today but im gonna feel pretty dumb if thats all that was wrong haha
