even with the hull, away from as much turbulance as possible, if back of bottom is flat no steps, 3/4 of the way from motor.

The 383c came with a little transducer mounting template in the installation instructions. If you have the paperwork it's in there, and it also tells you how/where to mount the xducer on both fg and aluminum hulls. If you don't have the paperwork and can wait, let me know and I can send you a photocopy. Check Humminbird's site as well. May be in there. Oh, and you'll love the 383c, great unit for the $$$.

I agree with "following the instructions in the owners manual". I just installed one of these on my neighbors boat. Pretty simple instructions. The book says to install it on the right side of the boat (facing the back of the boat). It must not be installed in line with any strakes on the bottom of the boat. Any turbulence will cause improper operation. Stay as far away from the motor as possible.
