need help with lower end

my lower end ran low on gear oil and somthing broke. i pulled the lower end and i can change gears the prop engages but i can spin the drive shaft.i am new to boat motors is it somthing i can fix or do i need a lower end? it is a 65 950ss any help would be great thanks.

The driveshaft snapped, or more likely the pinion gear stripped. Take it apart and see what you can salvage, but you'll probably end up looking for a gearcase.
