HEllo, I bought this boat and it didn't have a lower end unit on it. I am needing one and I am not sure what I need. can you help? I know I need more info so please let me know what to post.
The boat is a Steury78 model house boat, v8 engine(ford/chrysler), and the other parts for the lower unit are mercursier.
here are some pics:

Re: need help with lower end

You're going to need A LOT of parts and work.. I see the hinge pins are missing... Just to start with... The leg/lower unit/drive you're looking for is called an MC-1, or model 1. The shift cable is also missing...

You also need to be posting in I/O section, not outboards.

Good luck, you're going to need it....

If you can't even bother to google a source for the lower unit how the heck are you ever going to finish this project?

I did but couldn't come up with anything in this site. If I found something would you think I would post a question. I'll get it done dont you worry about that.
Thanks for the help though. why would you even bother wasting time posting something that isn't helpful to someone? Who even cares.

Anyone else willing to help?

Try SEI for a leg... I don't think they are that expensive... BUT, you have far more to worry about than a leg... Get, or download, the service manual and have a look at what you need...

1. Leg
2. Hinge pins
3. Shift cable
4. I would replace all the bellows and the water tube
5. Trim limit and sender kit...

And that's just what I can see from the photos!!!

Why did I post? Because you waste the time of readers. Because you sounded like a hundred other lazy or hopeless cases that posted similar questions in the past. Getting hopeless cases to rethink their question or try harder is helpful.

Google worked for me...maybe your using a different version of google:rolleyes:

I'll try that. Thanks for the help.
I've never in my life had one of these and didn't even know where to begin or what questions to ask.

Re: need help with lower end

The very first thing you should do is download the manual... That will give you a good idea of what's needing to be done....

Merc didn't use Chrysler engines and finished with Fords in 1977, so I think this is the manual you'll need.

Service Manual #2 1974 to 1977 All Engines and drives.
http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/SERVICE/CRUISER/Servmanl/02/cover.pdf

It's BIG!!! 1.3GB, so don't try to open it in your browser, right click, select Save As and save it to a hard drive location.

I found that I need the alpha 1 unit. Thing is pricy. I'd like to find one used but is that a bad thing?

Check one of the ads at the top of the screen.. iBoats have complete units for $1195... Trust me.. That is NOT pricey. Go to Merc and see how much they are... $5,000+, THAT is pricey...

Here's the link, (if you have 2bbl carb on a 302 engine, then you need a 1.50:1 ratio (with the new gear set in the lower that's a 1.47:1))

Re: need help with lower end

Wow! I'm new here and new to I/Os, both of my boats had 125 Force OBs, so I can see why Hotrodchevy56 came to you guys and asked some questions that may seem stupid to some ( Martian - what planet is he from?). (We car guys gotta stick together Hotrod!) I was always taught that the only stupid question was one that wasn't asked! Anyway I joined this sight because I just came into some marine parts that I don't know what they are or what to do with them. I received some terrific help from Ezeke with a Johnson 70 hp - Whom by the way is obviously an expert and a gentleman who knows the value of helping others. Now I have a question for you Merc guys and maybe we can help Hotrod out at the same time. I have what I think is a Merc outdrive. How do I find out about it, the only number I can find on it is at the top - # 0382?

I found that I need the alpha 1 unit.
from what i understand, a alpha1 will work. however yours is pre-alpha i think. pre alpha's and alpha1's are very similar. similar enough they're interchangeable.

looks like 57teebird has what you need....;), baring gear ratio....

read up in your service manual. you do need more than just the drive.... yer in for bellhouseing work....

teebird. probably best to start your own thread. you'll get better response to yer question... anyways. look on the side. the serial number may be stamped into the upper.... like this...

IMG_2671.jpg

this is a 72 1 drive. yours should be similar... look close at where the paint's scraped off. ya can see the s/n....
also, http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm follow how do i id my drive....

Thanks Ziggy, you were right on the money, the serial # was there and it's a pre-alpha! Now what to do with it?
Thanks again, T-byrd

Re: need help with lower end

Don't be so negative Bondo- someone out there may need it! - You know what they say ?One mans junk ---" I took it to a local marina and he said it in pretty solid condition, he also determined that is has a 1.84 gear ratio. So I put it on Craigslist, hopefully someone out there could make use of it.
Again, thanks for the help and opinions (even the - ones), T-byrd
