The project boat that i just bought came with a 20 horse suzuki that i just sold as it just need too much work. I am having trouble finding whats the max size or a comfortable size motor that will go on the boat. This is what i know so far. the boat is a 1973 johnson manufactured by whites fiberglass in groveland florida. Transom to bow is 14.5' and width is 5'. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

I don't know the specifics of the boat, but I've owned and been around a few 14-14.5' glass boats from the 70s. Most were rated in the 40-50HP range.

I think if you're keeping it to 40 and under you're fine.

My 75 Sunray 14.5 ran a 50HP (max rating) and hit 29-30MPH GPS.....

A friend with a similar 14' running a 35HP was low 20s so depending on what you'll need, these may offer you a good guide to start with.
