Hi 1966. Welcome to iboats. I used to have a '66 33 hp Johnson myself. Great old "Big Twin" motor. Lots of low end torque and power for their size and weight. There are really on ly 3 things you need to get these old gems to run; Spark (should jump a 1/4" gap with ease using Champion J6C plugs and 7mm copper core spark plug wires), Compression (over 80-90psi per cylinder with both cylinders within 10% of each other), Fuel (primer bulb should get firm prior to start up, then soften once motor is running)(you can use 50:1 mix, but I use 24:1 in all my '60s area Johnsons and have never had an issue with smoke or fouling a plug, and a the extra oil is good for these old 2 strokes.) Be sure you check each of these factors before moving on to the next. Here are some links that can walk you through a tune up from top to bottom. You can get an routine parts like carb kits, coils/points/condensers kits, lower unit seal kits, etc...right here at iboats for about $25 each. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

I would go ahead and rebuild the carb. You can get a kit right here for about $25. You should probably go ahead and get a new float too, as the original cork float has almost certainly deteriorated. Here's a how-to link. It's for a slightly different model, but the basic steps are the same.

i have the same motor, which seems to shut off while im operating it at low speed just going slow. if i let it sit for about ten minutes it starts back up. its getting plenty of water it seems, and doesnt seem to be getting hot. i can hold my hand on the heads. any ideas on what could cause this to happen. i just changed the water pump to make sure it was good, and still no diffrence?
