So I have a 1990 Cobalt 253 Condure(25') with a mercruiser 454 chevy motor, but it has a Volvo outdrive with a duo prop. So obviously 1 of them has been changed. Not sure of the model, but will try to post pic of the drive. Anyways I am trying to separate the lower leg to inspect 2 cracks, possibly from water getting in and freezing, and see if it is repairable. The cracks are circled in the pic. Anyways I have no books of any kind, and can't seem to get the 2 separated. I have taken out 5 stainless allen bolts.
Also last time it was on water, I was having problems with getting reverse, kinda 50/50. Anyone that can direct me would be very appreciated. Hoping I can separate the 2 and repair with Marine Tex !! HEEEEELP. Greg

Re: Need help with older Volvo Duo Prop

Ok I have now been through tons of threads and realize I better ask where to put oil in and how much. Also my shifting problem(not going into reverse) may have to do with lack of oil in lower unit!! Soooo.. any links with pics would be great, also maybe what caused water to get in in the 1st place.
Tried getting large phillips screw off to look behind linkage cover, and am just ruining the screw, can't bust loose....Maybe mini torch?? Thinking my drive may be a 280 from what I have been reading tonight !! Wait to hear back from anyone with some input. Greg

Heat will be your friend with this drive as it looks like it has been sitting in water, And also a impact driver will help remove the screws on the top cap plate And help remove the oil drain plug in most cases. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93481That style drive Will hold right about 3qts of oil, If you are sure you got all the bolts out you could try heating between the upper and lower to see if you can get it to drop. You REALLY DO need to go buy A volvo service manual for your drive. Look really close at the transom and drive for a plate with a serial number and some letters on it so you know what drive you have, And so you can get the right parts,The letters will be varry importin in finding the right parts, And you will need to learn how to fill your drive oil the right way, Some volvos you need to fill from the top down and some you need to fill from the bottom up, Or you will get a big air pocket and damage your drive. And I would be just guessing right now if I told you away to fill it and it is wrong I would feel bad. So buy a manual before you do any thing trust me. Also more then likely the drive is [OEM] and the engine is the replacement, It would be too hard and cost way to much to have a volvo drive installed if it had a merc in place before. And being your boat is 25ft, A lot of guys wanted to up grade the engine for better performance anyways in most cases. Also you will need the manual to know what oil to put back in the drive because some of them used engine oil and others used volvo drive oil, And you do not want to mix them up, or you will be replacing gears soon. I wish you luck with it.

The outdrive is a Volvo 290DP or a DP-A or B series.
Here is the link to the OEM service manual for that outdrive.

You MUST get that back cover off, if you want to get the drive apart. There are 2 bolts under it holding the lower on.
I have had to drill the heads off of those cover screws and pry the cover off the screws due to corrosion.
From the looks of the picture, you are going to need a new lower, in the manual near the back is a drawing that shows where you can weld. The area your cracks are in are in the oil passage and where the gears and bearings are. I would have to guess there was no oil in the drive, only water and it froze. Can't imagine what your gears and bearings will look like. The upper is probably in poor shape too, if water was in it.
