I have a 1984 Wellcraft Elite 200 with a mercruiser 228 alpha 1 sterndrive that I completely restored using this site.

I just went to put my boat in and my "throttle only" button failed.

See photos. It is side mount and has trim on handle. No key on remote

Cables and trim wires are good.

Memorial day is next week and stripers are running! PLEASE HELP!!

How do you mean "the throttle only button failed"? Typically when that happens, that "red" round piece you can see (in pics) is broken. It's a beast to change! If you can locate 1. That control & most of it's components are obsolete.

Re: Need help with Remote Controls

Cant get it to move without putting it in gear..."throttle only" to start the engine. The button doesn't work to disengage the shift cable.

Not looking for the part to fix. Need to find out what controls I need. Looking online it looks like I am going to have to change my cables as well.

Are there any controls that will use my existing Alpha 1 cables?

Morse or TeleFlex come to mind.

He's got an assembly (going back together) problem! Took it apart too long ago. Anybody have access to Merc's "REMOTE CONTROL" manual?

Re: Need help with Remote Controls

Sorry I wasn't clear. I don't expect to be able to fix this.

I am looking for a recommendation for a complete replacement unit that hopefully doesn't require new cables

1) I can't find a quicksilver unit that seems to be right and they all appear to require Gen II cables.

2) The "UFLEX B184 M" unit says its an easy fit with existing Merc cables. Anyone use that unit?

3) The teleflex units require cables. Are they worth the extra effort?

Please help

Changing the control box should not need new cables. Your look like Merc type 600A.The GEN II ones are more like Morse Red Jacket

Re: Need help with Remote Controls

After hours on the internet I ordered the Teleflex SL-3 No. 309475-002.

1) Does anyone know if I need any separate adaptor kit to hook up to my existing mercruiser 600A cables. Sounds like from the description it should hook right up.

2) Does anyone know if this unit includes a nuetral shut off switch. Teleflex sells one separately and it doesn't say.

Thanks

Re: Need help with Remote Controls

The SL3 like most include the neutral start , it will accept your cables without an issue.
Simple to install and set up.Should not need any type of adaptor to install 600 type cables.

Doctur

Thank you very much for the response. I was able to finally find the installation manual online and it looks pretty staighforward. Hopefully the shipment comes before Memorial day and the stripers come and go up here.

Thanks Again This site is a real service. Couldn't have rebuilt this boat without it!

You say it's a beast to change, but by any chance do you know the process? Mine isn't broken,
but I have to press hard to get it to disengage so that I can start the engine not in gear. Also, I saw that there is a "control box repair kit - Part Number 85882A 1" Any idea is that will work on this type of remote control? Thanks

Re: Need help with Remote Controls

Try disconnecting both the throttle & shift cables. Pretend your boating, move them back & forth. Try again to push the button in. Is it the same or different?
