You can find other ways to gain ignition if your creative as well. My guess is replace the condensor, file and set the points. replace the plugs and shoot some mix ( absolutely not ether ) into the carb. If it's got some life, you'll find it
It's a cool boat/ motor package. I love old sears stuff. But keep oars handy
there should be a kill switch which grounds the coil. The condensor absorbs some of the charge across the points so that they do not burn. there is more to it then that, but that's a big function of them. When they go bad, they absorb all of the charge and your left with no spark.. It likely has no spark interrupt for shifting. change the condensor, and gap the points and see if you can gain spark. If you do it will run if it has good compression
Old points and condenser systems can easily be changed to electronic ignition now days at a cost less than new points and condencers.
