I am disassembling the lower unit on a 91 Force 120 HP and cannot get the retaining ring off that holds the propellor shaft into the housing. It is an externally threaded ring about 3 3/4" with notches around the inside. I need to locate some type of spanner wrench that will fit this ring. Can anyone please help. Thank You.

If you have a manual, it should state the type of tool you need.

I know now that is a bearing carrier retaining ring wrench. I do not know where I can find one to use for a short while without spending a small fortune to buy one. Do marinas rent tools like these??

not usually
we made several over the years.
the neatest one I saw was for a v6 yamaha in rio chico venezuela. it was the front locking hub from a toyota with 3/8ths nuts and bolts. fit right in welded a shaft to it and volia, instant tool. I almost died laughing but it worked. I made one once with a piece of 1/4 flat stock about 4" wide. bored(actually burned) a hole in the middle and drilled 2 1/2" inch holes on the correct circle used 1/2 bolts and nuts and installed the ring. here in the salt pond I dont even attempt to remove them. I just carefully drill 3 1/4" holes in the nut, 2 side by side and the third about 120* away, and crack them ou. dont hit the carrier threads and bullit point bits work the best as the cut very flat holes and wont walk. its amazing what you can do on a saturday night with an oxy/acetyle rig and some drill bits and a six inch set of calipers. but we fished the tourney the next day.

Thanks for the input. The idea af making one had crossed my mind. I don't run in salt water and the retainer doesn't look to be corroded at at, but it just budge by trying to rotate it by taping a screwdriver against one of the ears. I'm hoping to find a piece of metal pipe the right diameter and cut ears into it with a grinder wheel. I thought I might be crazy for even thinking of making a tool.
Thanks again
