i took 1/2 of the floor out in back, 2 of 4 stringers are rotten. one is the main stringer. my question is do i have to pull out the whole thing or is there something i can use to piece one together after cutting out the bad section.

Re: need help with stringers

i wish i could post some pics but my computor crashed when i tried to down load that program into this very old system. the smaller stringer is'nt any trouble,i was told how it can be replaced.its the 2 x 6 main one that has me worried. all i can tell everyone is that i used a welding pic to hear a thud and cut a small piece of the glass away.one spot was still very wet but solid then i moved down 6" or so cut more glass away and the wood was flaking when i used a razor to pick at it.is there any hope for this problem,i can do some glass work but if it can't be fixed with out ripping the entire stringer out then its time to dream of another boat at another time.

Chris - It is hard to give you any advice based on the little info you have given us. Generally if a stringer is rotten it must be completely be removed and be replaced for a good repair. Often when a stringer is bad the transom will have rot in it also. You may have found a reason for dreaming.

Re: need help with stringers

Greetings,

Sistering is done often in wooden boat construction...where panels are placed on each side of the butted components of the hull.

It's a complicated procedure requiring a calculation of the length and thickness of the sistering panels. This will prevent a too-stiff spot or too-flexible spot in the scantlings. The size and type of the original material being joined enters into the calculation as well as the type of joint.

The most recent experience with this was a gunwale panel replacement(rot) with a backerboard. The backer is the same thickness as the hull. The height of the joint and size of the replacement panel dictated a certain width of backerboard.

There must be some fiberglass boat builders out there.

Enjoy

thankyou everyone for the help on my problems, with what i thought might be my first boat.since the value of the boat is much less than the rebuilding cost,i guess it sank on me. may you all have a safe and happy boating new year.
