Stator 5,400&148
rectifier failed showed cont backwards then described in book(batt charges:confused:)
stator alt test 1.5 ohm& no cont
trigger test 1,400
Mercury switch good

had trouble understanding high tension lead and figured tower was coil pack
so i tested cont on each coil was good
Then grounded to motor and tested coil terminals
this is what i found on the DCA reading (old meter)
#1=0
#2=1.8
#3=1480
so is it bad and is that why I'm having power loss at wot and if the rectifier is bad is that why too my batt still charges

Please help

still don't know about the readings if i did it right or not but they still are way off
#1=0
#2=1.8
#3=1480
Checked spark and they all have blue spark
the plugs #3 looks lite tan gray #2 gas and oily with a ring of carbon building around center and #1 even more gas and oily then 2 and has black carbon like crust building over center

Re: need help with test results

Why are you testing them? Do you have a problem? If you have 3 nice fat blue sparks.... Leave it alone! Put it all back together and got boating....

Ok... results...

Rectifiers can only be tested when out of circuit and with the 'DIODE' test function on the meter. You should get conduction when each of the diodes is forward biased, and no conduction when they are reverse biased... But, if the battery is charging ok, leave it alone.

Coil primary and secondary should be tested with the meter on the RESISTANCE scale.... You wrote that the meter was on DCA (that's Direct Current Amps) and you should have 4 of them, not 3.
If you're having problems, do the tests again (with the meter on the right scales) and get back here...

Re: need help with test results

Well Chris I did the test over and all came out okay I still don't understand why I can ground to the motor and 1 coil registers and the other 2 don't(3cyl) that's not the correct way any how guess i just panicked yesterday Reason for all this is loss of power at wot after 15 min then only half throttle after that .the 1st time it happened a went into fuel pump and it was bad so i replaced it and it happened again so i cleaned the tank out and am going to do the carbs again(3rd time) probably trash in them. I noticed air bubbles coming into fuel filter so i ran new fuel lines and bulb yesterday but have not cranked it yet to see if it stopped any ideas?

Thanks for the help as always

What does the engine do when it fails? Does it drop 1 or 2 cylinders, or does it bog down evenly?

The plugs should all read brown paper color like #1. If they have carbon and oil on them, that cylinder is not firing right. Could be fuel, compression, or spark.

2 often overlooked points of failure are engine grounds at the coils and whatever drives them (switchbox, etc.) The other is crimped connectors sometimes fail under the insulation just above the crimp. You can usually feel the break if you try.

Air in the fuel is bad. It has to be a leak somewhere between the tank and the engine. It could be the pickup tube in the tank itself. (been there, done that.)

hope it helps

Re: need help with test results

Thanks John, just ran it and bubbles were gone when i tested everything i cleaned all leads and terminals and it seemed to be running good
I tried to check the tube but failed to get it out put lots of pressure on the fitting and would not budge so i left it but since bubbles are gone it could have been the lines or bulb soon i run on the water i get back here

Don't fix it if it ain't broke. The info was for if you were still getting bubbles.

A word of philosophy. Do things for a reason. Use diagnostics and reasoning to locate possible troubles, factoring in the effort required to investigate different things. If you just take things apart and put them back together, you increase the odds of introducing a second fault, which makes the diagnostics even harder.

hope it helps
