'87 Mercruiser I/O, 3.0 litre, Alpha one, 4 cylinder - on a 17' Chaparral.

I lost the spring the goes from the throttle onto the carburetor, when I start the engine it is going at full throttle with the carburetor wide open. From what I understand, normally the carb is closed, then when you increase the throttle, it will open up and increase speed. The spring that regulates this has been lost. I bought a few different sizes of springs but cannot remember how the spring goes, or where it goes. I could really use some help.
-Thanks

It doesn't NEED a spring to bring it back to idle, You have a solid core cable going from the throttle control at the helm throttle and shift control to the carb.
My guess is, the control is hooked up impropperly. Is this boat new to you, been worked on, need a little histroy here.

No, I've had the boat for 4years now. I've done all the work on it myself and have never had this problem before. When I start the boat it idles extremely high, as if I have throttle completely wide open. I had a friend manually close the wing (not sure what its called, but the lever inside the carb that opens and closes as you adjust the throttle) and this slowed the idle down. It just will not do it on its own.

Find a qualified mechanic before you blow up the engine.

"The Dude" is a cool nickname for him. Much better than a name that starts with the letter S(****head). Completely kidding, dont want to offend any Old Salts out there. Gotta keep a sense of humor.
Don S. I appreciate your reply, maybe the tone gets distorted in written form.

I am a short time member here but can say that I have gotten and seen more posts from Don that have helped. He has forgotten more than I will ever know so I'd take his advice to heart. Sometimes posts meant to sound joking are taken the wrong way. I think that is why they put those silly emoticons on the side there. I never use them though. :D as they are silly. :p Now, enough defending Don as I am sure he's asking who the heck I am, and speaking up for him.
