Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Thanks Cad for the info .... The transom that was in there was pretty rotted but appeared to be made of several pieces of boards that were formed to make the curve. There was on piece of ply in the middle as you can see in the pic. You are right the transom is curved at the bottom and fairly straight at the top. I have been sanding like crazy on the transom that I had put together and I think I have formed it really close to where it has to be. I just dry fit it in with the clamps that I had made off the drawing that Woodonglass had posted and I am real close.

Cool, I normally just use a couple layers of CSM and resin to bond new plywood to the outer skin, but a peanut butter mix (thickened resin) might be a better choice here since you will most likely have some larger voids to fill in.

On your clamping system just make sure you keep the top of the transom and down as far as the outboard will mount perfectly true and flat....and you only need enough presure on the clamps to make sure you're straight and true, you don't have to squeeze everything out... ;) :p

Good luck and keep us posted.

How thick of a layer of PB do I need to install the transom? Should I coat both the outer skin and the transom? Is it a heavy coat or a thin coat of PB?

Sorry, I been gettin hammered at work!!! IF you can sand and form your old transom that will work. Use a 3/8" notched trowel for applying the PB on BOTH the outer skin and the Wood Transom and like CW said Don't clamp it too hard. Just enuf to get some squeeze out. You're gunna need to mix about a gallon of resin.

I was able to sand it to shape and it fits good but man that sure took a lot of sanding. I am going to seal it with one coat of resin and then one layer of csm on friday and then I will be ready to put it in this weekend. Do I need just one layer of csm to seal it?

To seal it one layer of CSM is fine.

My boat has metal stringers that are bolted to the transom. These bolts go thru the outer skin and transom and are below the water level. Do I need to pre drill these holes before installing the transom or after everything is in and glassed up? And how do I seal the bolts from leaking when I install them?

Wait till the Transom is ALL glassed in and Tabbed to the Hull. Install the stringers Mark the holes drill em, then coat the holes and the bolts with 3M 5200 Sealant when you do the final installation of the bolts to the stringers.

I want to change the steering system in the boat from pulleys and cables to something more modern. Any suggestions?

I am looking to replace the drain tube in the transom and I have seen plastic, brass and aluminum. Is one prefered over the other or doesn't it matter and is this installed with 5200?

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I have my transom all made and I am ready to seal it with the poly resin but it has been hot and really humid here in Ohio. I planned on sealing it early in the morning when it is cooler but the humidity is still high. Is this going to effect the resin at all or should I wait till it is less humid?

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

If you do it Early in the mornings you should be fine as long as the humidity is under 85%.
