Volvo Penta AQ131D 4cyl. Last October was the last time this boat was running, at that time the only issue it has was a backfire when I throttled the engine up slowly, if I did it quick no problem. Well that last time out, I took a few waves which ended up getting into the gas tank which was apparently full of holes on top in the back end. Got towed back because the water entered the tank. I vaccumed the water out of the intake manifold, and pulled the plugs, cap, rotor, and replaced all. The boat sat since Oct. I had the starter rebuilt while it sat. I started the boat with a new above deck tank I installed last week. It turned over ok, but did not fire. Today, I got it to fire by opening the throttle and turning the key, it ran smooth and steady, when I put the throttle back of course it backfired all over the place and died, restarted with no problem and idled ok, what I noticed was the outdrive vibrating like crazy, but the motor looked fine. I hooked the timing light to it and it was at 6 degrees at idle. Cannot figure out why the drive is vibrating so bad, it smooths out considerably when I move the throttle forward and let it run at a higher RPM. I need help with what I should do to, 1, fix the backfire, and 2 stop the vibration. Could the vibration be caused by a blocked exhaust manifold? I had water coming out the exhaust, but when I opened the plug on the manifold, there was no water coming out, just black rust.

Have you ever checked the bellows for water? After setting a long time with water in it, the ujoints could be rusty and cause the problem. Along with a few other things.
Are you sure the vibration is from the drive or could it be the engine idling rough. It's hard to tell from here, only you can hear and see it. We can't.
When you was running the engine, was water coming out of the transom shield or any part of the exhaust out the back of the boat?

I would also check the springs / weights under the points plate in the distributor.

Don, the boat was on muffs. From inside the boat, the engine did not appear to be vibrating, outside the boat, the top of the drive was vibrating. I will check the bellows, but they were just replaced prior to the boat issue last oct. As for water coming out of the transom or any other area on the back of the boat: I had to apply pressure with my hand to the muffs to force the water up to the impeller at first, then it would come out the exhuaust area on the drive, I know the manifold is probably no good, I removed the ball **** on the exhaust manifold and no water was coming out, packed with rust particles. the water line that runs up to the exhaust was full of hot water. I notices small particles of rust coming out the exhuast with the water. Could the exhuast manifold if blocked be the cause? I will also look to have the carb rebuilt, don't like the backfire and not sure what is causing that. Thanks. Dennis

Re: Need help with Volvo Penta

I would suggest you remove the upper gear box and inspect the ujoints for play, and the shaft in the flywheel cover for any up and down movement at all, there should be none at all.
This should help in removing the gear box,

You also havea short drive shaft and bearing inside the bellhousing, connects the engine to the drive. If that has not been checked/replaced in a while, maybe it is time to check it out. That could also be causing your vibration problems.

Have a great day

Rob.
