need help with wiring

hello..i installed new tach..it zeros when you turn the key..but no signal from the brown wire..what do i need to replace..i think the altinator is working..i disconected the battery and it still runs..the motor is a 78 merc 700..thanks

do i need to replace the rectifier or stator is this an easy install and is their an easy way to check them..thanks

Are you sure you are looking at the correct signal wire? Just FYI, on my 84 Merc 200, the brown wire is for the temp sender.
