Need help with year?

I have just purchased a Johnson 18hp motor. The model number is FD-18E, serial # J2480814. This is a Sea Horse. Any one know what year? It seems to run great, but needs some cosmetic work. Any ideas on where to find parts or manuals? Any help would be appreciated.

Ahoy, TNN.

According to my book your engine is a '64 electric start 18hp.

You can get an aftermarket manual right here (click on Repair Manuals at the bottom of the page). One good source of parts online is www.twincityoutboard.com

Your local NAPA store or most Johnson/Evinrude dealers can get you parts.

Good luck. :)

JB,
I am not sure about the electric start. There is a pull rope that has the handle recessed slightly in the motor cover itself. I do not see any way/place for electric start. If this is, will the manuals show how to hook it up? And, where would one go about finding an electric start mechanism?

The "E" in your model # indicates electric start. The starter would be mounted to a bracket on the left side of the engine, facing the carberator. It's possible that the starter (and perhaps the bracket) were removed sometime in the past, or your transom bracket with nameplate was pulled from another outboard. You could check this by comparing the serial # on the Welsch plug on top of the block to the one on the nameplate. The manual will tell you pretty much all you need to know. I've got the Seloc one and like it very much.

Thanks for all the help and wonderful info. This is a great web forum/site. I have just one final question--Is there any particular 'flaw' or 'gremlin' in this model motor that I need to look out for?

:) Thanks for all your help again everyone. :)
