i have an old 40hp johnson sea horse. i was wondering if someone would know the age of it here are the model and serial #'s 40el76a, j4522886. thanks, also it has a knob selection u can turn to the right or left may sound dumb but it also says slow speed what is this? if you can help i appreciate it thank you

Welcome to the board.

There are a lot of people who can help you here but a couple of tip.
Best place to post this question is in the Johnson and Evenrude Forum.
Also when you make your post over there don't say need help but instead Say

Need to find year and information about A Johnson Model 40EL76A.

This way experts over there will know if they can help you without even opening your post.
Many over there know how to look up model information.

Many on the board will not open a post that says need help or please help. Everyone is here to help and learn. Give enough information in the subject so people do not have to open every post to see what it is about. You will get more to open your post that way.

I am not trying to get down on you just trying to help.

The knob that says slow I belive is the slow speed idle adjustment. It is Carburator adjustment to adjust the air fuel mixture so it will idle good as slow speed. Inside the carburator there are high speed jets that take cre of the air fuel mixture when running faster.
