I have searched and found some good stuff but not exactly what i need. It's an 1989 Evinrude 25 electric start. It was repaired and was running about 4 years ago and we never got to use it. I just got it out and started gettin it to run right. I had no idea about 2 stroke motors only 4 stroke so dont get mad at me for my ignorance! I poured out the old gas we had used for it and i mixed some new gas with crappy Fred's brand universal oil mix. I mixed it for 50:1 but its not exact. My idiot self couldnt get it runnin so i sprayed a little engine starting fluid in it. I didnt know! The flywheel wouldnt turn freely after that. Then we realized i didnt have the emergency clip in!!! I felt like an idiot! So we got it to start by manually choking it by covering the throttle body. It will start and run while you have the throttle up but it will cut off. The flywheel still wont turn freely. Could it just be the crappy Fred's oil or should i get some twc-3 and put some in the spark plug holes to lube the pistons or did i mess it up bad when i use the starter fluid? Please help!

Re: Need help!

First, Never use starting fluid; it has no lubrication in it and will ruin your cylinders and bearings. Yes, get rid of the "universal" oil and get outboard oil that's marked "tcw-3" and mix at a 50 to 1 ratio 2.5 ounces to the gallon. Good luck.

Yea i figured that out about the starting fluid and could the universal oil make it cut off?

I don't know what "Fred's" oil is but if it is rated it is probably not crappy...just not made for your motor. So yes get the right oil. As for whether it will solve your problem, I don't know. When troubleshooting you have to make sure that everything in your control is right then you can narrow it down.

I mixed some good gas with penzoil and its runnin pretty good now. I think all the junk and crap just had to run out of it. Works pretty good now.

Re: Need help!

Never heard of "Fred's' either.
If it is an actual proprietary brand, even if it is not a TCW3 type, the amount of running that it sounds like you did with it should not have any negative impact on the engine.

If Fred is just a guy just down the street and he said "here use my special universal oil mix".... all bets are off....;)
