Re: Don't know where to start

Re: Don't know where to start

Here's where I located the telltale on my '67 80hp V-4(now sold).

Just drill the hole in the top of cyl#1 about an inch or so back from the head gasket is.

I wrapped the threads with teflon tape. Don't screw the fitting all the way in cause it will probably bottom out against the cyl sleeve and not allow water to get into the fitting. I should be plenty snug screwed half way in.

Re: Don't know where to start

Thanks again bonairll. I think I'll be doing that real soon. Picked up a tap and dye set today. One nice thing about buying the boat is its given me the excuse to go buy more tools. :D

If your new to tapping holes(like I was). Find a scrap piece of metal and try to drill/tap it for practice before doing it for real on your motor.

Re: Don't know where to start

I have done it a few times but I think I'll probably take your suggestion and do a few practice runs before I go drilling into my motor. I would not be a happy camper if I screw that one up I'm sure.

Re: Don't know where to start

Don't overthink it too much. If you did screw it up it(which you won't) it wouldn't be the end of the world. Worse case scenario...you would just have to drill it out a bit larger and re-tap it.

It's aluminum, so it's really easy to drill/tap.

if you do it the way i did then you can get the fittings in the plumbing section of Lowe's/Home depot. No need to order online. The delrin tube is a much better option than the OMC bulkhead fitting IMO.

Re: Don't know where to start

So is that delrin just a section of tube that you run the hose thru or did you attach the hose to the tube? How did you attach the tube to the cowl?

Re: Don't know where to start

This is what it looks like.
https://www.dialmfg.com/HighDefPictures/9512-125 - 2004 HD wht bkgrnd.jpg

The fitting I screwed into the motor is a brass fitting with a delrin tube in it(compression fit). I used icemaker tubing from the fitting to another delrin tube in the lower shroud of the motor. See my vid again to see the water coming out of the delrin tube.

I drilled a hole the diameter of the tube...pushed the delrin tube into the hole from the outside of the lower shroud(the flared end keeps it from going through)...I attached the icemaker hose from the fitting to the delrin tube. It fits snugly, but I used a zip tie to secure it...and used a dab of 3M 4200 to secure it to the lower shroud.

I can shoot a quick vid of my setup if you'd like.

Re: Don't know where to start

Ok I think I see how you did it now. So you didn't use the actual fitting on the shroud end just put the tube thru. If you wouldn't mind putting one up that shows the fittings that would be great if it's not too much trouble. Thanks you've been a lot of help to a total rookie.

Re: Don't know where to start

Great thank for that haffiman. I'm a bit nervous about this one since it involves drilling into my motor so I'm really trying to get all my ducks in a row before I tackle it.

Re: Don't know where to start

Re: Don't know where to start

Ok so now I need more help. So I checked compression with hot motor closed throttle and got 112/128/122/112. I ran a second test a few min later and got 115/130/125/110. I checked spark and it was good. I set the start advance and the motor starts much better cold now. So I hooked up a timing light and found it to be at 10 degrees at idle which my service manual says shoul be 5. So obviously that needs to be adjusted but I'm not sure how to do this because the manual says after setting to 5 degrees I have to shut it off and adjust the throttle cam yoke (no problem) than put in wot and adjust full throttle adjustment screw ( no problem) than start motor and run to 4300-4600 rpm in gear and set timing to 20 degrees. So I guess my long winded question is hoe do I 1 run the motor at basically wot in gear in a tank and how do know I'm at 43-4600 rpm since my motor has no tach? I would really appreciate so of your guys expert guidance. Thanks.

Re: Don't know where to start

Ok so I used the top secret file and checked the timing and it was ok. I'm going to try and do a link and sync and see if I can't get her to smooth out some. I would appreciate any other tips of things I should look at.

Re: Don't know where to start

Update. I did a link and sync checked timing adjusted my start speed. In the tank the motor starts way better cold and seems to idle better. It also seems to want to go into gear without dying. Some of the adjustments were fairly far off. I'm hopefully going to take it for a quick dunk tomorrow while the lake should be nice and quite and see if it's any better. Don't know if anything I did will help my no top end problem but we will see. Wish me luck.

Re: Don't know where to start

Thanks bonairll that is helpfull. I'm hoping to get to that soon. If tomorrow goes well I might try and tackle the tell tale next weekend. I'm feeling kind of proud for getting the work I did done. Hopefully it will help my problems I've been having.

Re: Don't know where to start

Thanks for the encouragement. I hope I get her sorted out. I would prefer not to have to take it to a mechanic. I should in theory be able to do the work myself and I have already put quite a lot of money into it, so paying to have it fixed is something I'd rather not do.

Re: Don't know where to start

Re: Don't know where to start

Ok time for a new update. After setting the start speed doing a link and sync, and setting the timing yesterday I got the boat in the water this morning. The good news is my cold starting problem is much better. The bad news is it still wants to die when I throttle up unless I feather it just right. I also still have no top end. It maybe goes 10 mph tops. The strange thing is despite following the directions in the service manual it seems like I'm not getting full throttle. The motor seems to rev much higher with the cold start advance than it does with full throttle. Also when I got back to the dock I was futzing around with it a bit and the motor died and was vary hard to get restarted despite being warmed up. Please help I don't know what to do next.
