i have a alpha one gen one outdrive on my boat i changed the u joints and yoke put all new seals torqued the bearings to a rolling torque of 5 inch lbs, i just re installed it and fired up the boat, now when i put it in drive at idle there is a speratic clunking in the upper gears but when i give it a little throttle it goes away..... now could the clunking be in gear and at suck a low idle there is no resistance so the gears kind of smack of should it not do it at all

torqued the bearings to a rolling torque of 5 inch lbs,

Are you positive that is what you should have done with those bearings?

Re: need help!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on your bearing setup. Do you have the small spacer with your bearings?

Nope, not a valid serial number.. Like to try again?

The 'clunking' could be the dogs banging on each other if the idle speed is really slow and changing slightly. And the variation may not even be enough for you detect either. As long as when the engine speed is increased a little it goes away, nothing to worry about....

And this is what I get when I put that number in....

I have also tried every combination of numbers that look like they might be something else. Like substituting 3, 9, 0, 8 and 6 for the 8, 6 and 0... Nothing comes up a drive.

Is the drive an original or maybe a re-manufactured unit?

Chris....

He probably didn't know it, and may have happened before he owned the boat.

Re: need help!!!!!!!!!!

Well I put the boat on the water yesterday and it seemed fine no wierd clunking or nothing, so I'm thinking out of the water I was getting gear slap cause there was no pressure on the prop

It's not gear slap, it's the dog clutch.
