Need help

Hi all. I recently purchased a 2006 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke s/n 1B343737.
Can anyone tell me if it has Yamaha (Japan) block or a China or US made one. I have been told that maybe its Yamaha made??

Looking at the parts diagrams it sure looks like it is a Yamaha block.

Thanks racerone . I contacted Mercury Marine in Wisc. and they said it was made by Mercury. Strange answer to say the least.

Why strange answer? It's a fact. They've been made by Mercury since 2001.

bassman284 The Yamaha block was not made by Mercury. All I wanted to know from Mercury if it was made by Yamaha as Yamaha made blocks for Mercury for a few years before Mercury made the 4 stroke blocks in China for the mid size motors. Correct me if I am wrong please.

I know Yamaha built the blocks up to 2000. Mercury started building their own for 2001 when they went to the EFI. I have a 2001 60 hp EFI that I bought new. I also have a good friend who has worked at Mercury in Fon du Lac for about 25 years. I think it was about 2008 or 2009 that Merc built the plant in China and started producing the mid size there - the whole motor not just the block. My friend now repairs those that are returned from the dealers. Full time work until he retires it appears. Some he can fix in an hour or two, some take a lot longer.
