Are there any mechanics in Phoenix AZ that work on a 1976 mercury 1150? The motor will crank but won't run.

Sorry, I can't help you with that, nor am I familiar with that model.

Are you mechanically inclined at all? If not, I totally understand.
But if you are handy, perhaps the experts here can help you troubleshoot it.
Who knows, it might be something simple.

I am a little, just not enough knowledge on outboards and don't want to take apart something I don't need to.

Well, good luck to you. I hope you find a reputable mechanic and get back on the water soon.

Goofy, The wiring harnesses on those motors are pretty well shot by now. Has it been replaced?

Those motors need to have +12VDC on the red and adjacent white wires on the switchbox to have spark.

The CDIElectronics has a test for wiring, switchbox, distributor cap and other components. It assumes the coil is good, and most are. It will isolate the trigger as bad or good.

Maxrules web site will have a wiring diagram for that motor. Most mechanics who worked on those motors are retired.

I think the wiring harness has been replaced. I am getting 12v at both red and white terminals. I did the CDI test and got spark, I also get get spark at the plugs sometimes. One day it will start and the next it will just crank. The last time out on the water it was running good then just started shutting off. I throttled down then up again in it would run good for a while then jerk and start to shut down again. Almost like timing was off. We got to our fishing spot and turned off the motor, when I tried to start again to move to different spot it would just crank and I haven't been able to get started since. I have had the carbs rebuilt recently and it is getting fuel. When I checked if I was getting spark one time I would get spark then sometimes no spark. I am so confused and can't figure out what is going on with it.
