Need home-repair discussion forum.

iboats is the best for boats, but I may have to slip away occasionally, to discuss home improvement or remodeling issues, especially flooring.<br /><br />I know it's hard to get away, but has anyone been to a good discussion forum for homes?<br /><br />Not nearly as much fun as boating, but hey, we're getting tired walking around on sub-flooring.<br /><br />Marty

use hardwood. Easy to install and lasts longer than anything else. Dont know of any sites that discuss this. Try going to Lowes or Home Depot. They often have "howto clinics".

Hey Marty....seen a couple of those "floating" hardwood floors. Man they look good and are easy to put down. Lowes or Home Depot should have the info.

I installed a pre finished solid oak floor from home depot once, they even loaned me the flooring nailer to do it,it was pretty easy and looks great. If i was ever to do it again i'd rent an air nailer though.

Hi Marty,<br /> Deciding on the type of flooring you want can be the hardest part of the job.Hardwood floors seem to be the most popular at the moment.Hardwood floors can also be painted,instead of clear poly.You may not want hardwood floors in the bath or kitchen though(although it's done).Many people prefer ceramic floor tile in bathrooms/kitchens(for durability) or vinyl tiles/vinyl sheet flooring.There are many advantages/dis-advantages to each material.The selection of ceramic tile types and sizes is dizzying.Think about your flooring project on a room by room basis and you can't go wrong.Don't forget wall to wall carpeting! Home Depot is a good place to start.

i know someone who will not have anything other than cork in kitchen & bathrooms... you might want to research it. i don't have it, but i think it comes in 1' panels that are put down with contact cement like some congoleum. personally, i've had full tiled bathrooms: counter/floor/shower and kitchen counter/floors - would never do it again. too much upkeep. grouting sux IMHO<br /><br />it sure looks good though

Marty, We just built (had built) a house 3 years ago and had floating engineered surface flooring installed by professionals. It had to be torn up because it buckled from the heating of solar load from south-facing windows. Apparently, the floating floor has to be free everywhere in order to expand and contract over the seasons, and it got stuck at an entry to the basement. They offered to replace it and my wife opted for a regular wood floor. But that's another story since then we chose pre-finished (polyurethane) beech which is soft and the dog scratches are driving her crazy. We had oak hardwood in our last house with no problem with dog marks. I would go for oak again the next time if there is a next time.

I just installed 800Sq Ft for Mannington Laminate on my main floor. From my experience the flooring is easy. All the pain and agony is in the floor prep. If you don't have a true floor (flat to within 1/8th inch over a 6 foot span) it can be a real PITA.<br /><br />I had a pull up subfloor and grind it down with a belt sander in some places and then use leveling compund in others. Lets not even start on the 1000's of staples left behind by the old floor.<br /><br />If flooring is your interest look here. I bought it all online..<br /><br /> http://www.fastfloors.com
