was going fishing and it had been a month since the last time out so I slapped on the water muffs and tried to fire her up in the driveway. Just before she turned over I heard the dreaded metal grinding metal noise. upon inspection I found the starter had sheared off its mounting brackets with the screws still in it in two spots one above the other.

what about the thread long mounts that are sheared off? thoes gotta be just right or that starter won't mesh up right with the flywheel. This is a 200HP 1976 evinrude V6. Thats some serious torque on thoes 3 points where the starter attaches to the engine and two of the three points are broken.

drill them out and use as a spacer. all of this is a long shot. you would have to get all that JB off.

how deep could I drill without doing damage to the inside of the engine?
I have the manual to this outboard but don't see any spec that would give me this info

I wouldn't go much deeper than 1/4" below the surface of the block. That should give you what looks like a 1/2" of thread. So the other bolt is intact, really??? Was anything loose or missing???

Re: need ideas on how to fix this

no, this has been the summer of spending $$$$$$. This is the third year I've owned this boat and by far fixed many thing this year. The starter has given me most of them. First day at the lake went through 1 old and 1 new battery tring to get it started after having carbs refirb at boat shop. I took it back and told them to replace all electric wires in the battery and starter system and they said they messed up the fuel line to the top carb.$$$$$$$$$
next time out the starter bindex is all screwed up most probally all the extra use on the starter. So I replace it.$$$$$$$$$ Get out on the water swim with family go to leave when ominious clouds close in(QUE Monsoon) and yep another problem with the bindex now jamed in the up position. A spring on the bindex was to blame. replaced the whole deal spring bindex washer nut ect. been great since made about 15 trips to the lake. started up 150 times or so. till this

That starter is a heavy unit, out-bound far from the block. A badly damaged prop will give a engine quite a shaking. The starter will be one of the first to be affected. Those broken bolts are going to be a problem, but I have seen this before. Try to drill out with a left handed drill. Is your prop damaged?

Re: need ideas on how to fix this

the local boat guy were i live does my alum welding,
if there is thread left in the block he can bolt those pieces to hold them in place mig it then drill and helicoil the two holes it would be the correct way to repair probaly 65 to weld and 20 a pop on the helicoils around 100 dollars
here ,but if ya have thread left in those hole you could use stainless studs
put them in with red loctite then drill the broken pieces to slip over studs for shims and use bolts ,my small block chevy broke out the side i screwed stud in it had it tach welded and used bolt ,been down the track abunch of times
and thats with 13 to 1 compression and mini torque starter
good luck and stay with it ,if you are close to me i can get a 1983 175 for 300 running with good comps ,i would buy it but already have two
