Hi, I have a 1989 spectrum 1700 aluminum hull. I need to replace the sole as it is rotten. Also I would like to fix the live well. Since is that it is a old boat and I can't find the live well anymore. So I would like to make my own using fiberglass. The problem is I have no idea how to fiberglass. My plan is to use some plywood and make the live well and then fiberglass over it. It dont have to look nice. My question is there is there some kind of beginner kit that I can get? And what would be the cost of doing that? Just a live well. Thanks.

Just as a suggestion........... look for a cooler that can be modified and used as a livewell...... oh yeah if you use any plywood just be certain to avoid ANY pressure treated wood.

The live well I need to replace is actually at the right side of the front deck. The shape is irregular. I would like to rest all the original look,.....

Read the "How To" on fiberglassing in the sticky at the top of the page, lots of other good info to read there too.

Yes, I tried to read that, but the information was overwhelming. I am hoping to find some post that actually did something like that with pictures. And if anyone recommend a starter kit for me.

No kits that I know of, you have to do that kind of stuff from scratch.

Have you looked around for the premade livewells, like they sell at Cabelas and Basspro?

You need to check your PC. Works just fine for me.

Oops thread is an excellent source of info as are many other threads on here. It seems overwhelming at first but after you read through the threads several times things start to make sense and you pick up bit of info you didn't notice the first time or two that you read through them. I personally like west systems because of their pumps. I don't have to worry about measuring, just equal # of pumps of resin and hardner and your batches come out consistent. My local supplier carries a booklet produced my west systems that I found to be very concise and informative...You might want to see if you can pick one up. Good luck!

Re: Need inf to start on a project.

I was in the same boat as you when starting my project. I just layed some fiberglass down for the first time this weekend, and it seemd to go good. I know what you mean about reading tons of information and getting a little over whelmed lol. The best thing that i did for learning about fiberglass was go to my local marine store and picked up a west systems brochure. In there it has literally everything you need to know about using there products for marine application. It'll tell you witch system to buy depending on the temperature you're working in, and what you want to do with it. It even tells you about PB and stuff like that.

It also has a section if things go wrong, it will tell you exactly what went wrong and how to fix it.

Even if you get the brochure and you are still left with some questions, there is a number you can call just to ask questions, and they're usually always glad to help you out.

anyways, i dont know if thats something you would interested in.. but i really recomend it.. and its free!
