Last week i found a 1978 Bayliner Skagit 2250 With a fiberglass waterproof deck, a Mercruiser 228 V8 and an OD that also says Mercruiser 228. It's in decent condition considering that it's been sitting outside under cover for about 3 years but the engine has been drained and supposedly started each year. I paid $300 for it.

My question is what can you tell me about the Mercruiser 228 engine and outdrive such as it longevity if maintained properly and if this combination has been reliable. I think the engine's a GM 305 V8. Is that correct?

Also, which OD would this be? Is it an Alpha 1 Gen 2 or?

Re: Need info on Mercruiser 228

according to a mercrusier drive application chart. the 228 is indeed a 305 gm. however it didn't start till '79. it had a mc-1 drive. in '78 it was a 228tr w/ a IItr drive. 78 was the last year for tr (77 was the first year, 78 the last year, so only two years of the IItr), 79 was the start year for mc-1.

assuming it's a '79 228, it's pre alpha. it went mc-1, 1r (revised), 1mr (major revised), alpha1. these drives are all quite similar and some what interchangeable. alpha 1 gen II is not similar or interchangeable with the previous 4 drives.

i've got the mc-1 behind my 165 L6. it's seems fine. on my forth year with it. i will say i liked the later mr-1 or alpha1 when they did away with the preload pin in the lower. the pin keeps the gears loaded and in mesh. when they did away with the pin, the redesign had a hard stop to keep the gears in mesh. i know that's not much explanation, but the best i can do. i believe it has to do with the driven gear in the lower and how it stays in mesh with the fwd or rev. gear on the prop shaft.

i try to baby my mc-1 drive. no idea if it's necessary. but i don't have the bread to replace the drive if it fails so i baby it + try and give it the regular pm it wants, needs to keep it as healthy as i can.

get your self service manual #3 and #4. 3 for the engine, 4 for the drive. it will be your bible you refer to for servicing your engine/drive package. it's a must have tool. get the oem sm too. no aftermarket. there is misleading and missing info in them manuals..

best i can do for ya. a real boat tech will have to take you further if i didn't answer the question..

228tr stuck in reverse

228tr stuck in reverse

I have a 1979, 40' Harbor Master houseboat. With twin 228tr motors out drives. Without telling my soap opera leading to this. My main problem are; My Starboard 228tr motor is stuck in reverse and starts in reverse. My Port 228tr motor starts in reverse. (there is a long story leading up to how this came about)
No one here in western KY/TN area want to mess with trying to fix. I do have Original motor manuals and #2 service manual but nothing covers what I need to know how to fix.
What sources can I get for Electric motors?

Welcome to iboats tnriver, you need to start a new thread of your own with all that information, not hijack a 2 year old thread that belongs to someone else.

Harris,

Yes, Gm 305. The 228 was only issued with TR drives in that year. Best post a photo and we can ID the drive for you..
