hello everybody, I am new here and have picked up some good information from the forums.
My question... I picked up a 14' aluminum v hull Starcraft and it has no id plate. I got it registered and now need to know what is the largest outboard I can use. I have a 1974 merc 9.8 and a 20 hp evinrude . I would like to use the 20 hp. As you can see from the pics I need to do a little work on it. Can I get a id plate for it?

Don't know for certain, but I'm 90% certain that 20HP would/should scare the dickens out of you in that boat. It's probably rated around 10, maybe 15. There is a Starcraft forum full of zealots (just playin' guys) who might know certainly. You can also try calling Starcraft - they're still in business.

Looks like I have the same boat. I will be using a 'Rude 9.9 on mine, but "lakelover" uses a 20 hp. on his....see this post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=524909&highlight=tanuki

What year and model do you have? I looked at the brochures and in 1971 all the 14" fishing boats were rated at 20hp.

That boat is much more substantial than the 14's I see rated for 15HP so I'm sure you're well withing the max rating with a 20.

Thanks guys, Every thing I read said a 20 hp is the max for this boat. With a 16 " transom I hope the short shaft outboards will work. it is a 1981 But I have no idea what model it is. I will be using the 20 for the ocean and striper fishing and the 9.8 for fresh water. A thought for people looking to make seats ... LOCUST... I am cutting a locust log for the seats. Sand it, stain it, varnish it and they should out live me.

25 hp on the SF14 which states a painted hull, 1982.

My 1965 Starcraft "seafarer" looks exactly like your "1981" with even the Starcraft green color....anyway the 1965 brochure states that the max hp for this 14'2" boat is 40 hp. See attached...

I might eventually have to join the Starmada

Talk about " scare the dickens" I think a 40 hp would sink this row boat
