Does anybody know the knot that is used when you wrap a handrail or steering wheel with cord or small rope to improve grip ? It's usually done with a small diameter cord 1/8 th inch or so and it has a knot in it that spirals around the rail . My boat has a stainless wheel , and it looks great . But it sure
is slick when its wet . I've seen this wrap used a lot on navy ships , no luck on any of the knot websites .

Re: Need knot help

You had it right when you said wrap I know how to do it but not how to tell you the right way to do it. If you look up wrapping rods it should give you what you are looking for it is basicly the same knot or just try looking up wrapping knots. Hope this helps you. When I splice anchor lines together I use the wrapping on the splice also.

Thats not quite it javascript:;. Imagine if every time you made a wrap you tied a knot , when its finished the knot progresses around the rail in a spiral . the trick is the knot . My first description was not so good . :%

The picture above, and whipping is used to keep the ends of rope from fraying out once cut. Elementary to an Eagle Scout.

This is what I was thinkng, but I just tried it and I don't think it can work as you end up doubling back on top of the coil. However . . . if you want the spiral it is waaaaay simple . . . it's just continuous half hitches. I just tried it and it works perfectly if you want that raised spiral look thing. Sooooo simple it'll pizz you off when you get it. Just go around and tuck under, around tuck under, around tuck under etc. etc. Pull tight after each and push them together so there are no gaps between the coils. Too simple, but it seems to do exactly as you wanted. I think you could do fishing rod handles the same way . . .

Re: Need knot help

Believe it or not that is what happens when you do the simple half-hitch thing I noted. I was using some 1/4 inch rope, so the spirals happen more quickly on a small diameter thing like that wheel. I am going to use some smaller cord and see if the spirals are simalar to that pic.

I also found a turkshead knot while looking . . . holy carp that looks really tough :%

Hmmmmmm,....... At Least I got the Hitch part Right......d:)

I Bet you could go thru a Pile of parachute cord doing that..........

Looks Pretty Cool.....

I can't feature doing it to My Destroyer Wheel though,.....
The Main Reason I like the SSteel Wheel is because it's Soo Easy to wipe the Fish Slime off it............d:)

Re: Need knot help

Check this out. I did it in about 5 minutes. The loop on the right is absolutely the whole deal . . . 8) The only thing you need to pay attention to is the tightness of each loop. Toward the end I figured out that you have to pull once back against the loop and then once the direction of the coil. The early loops are a little "longer" as you can kinda see toward the left. It is so simple I am still shaking my head . . .
