I picked up 17' ft Glastron with a 90HP Outboard Johnson Motor. My friends and I are going to fix it up and get it in the water. The thing is that we do not know anything about boats!!

The boat has been sitting in his yard for years. He said he fired the motor up about 2 yrs ago and it ran but the tilt/trim does not work. Someone told me that I should replace all the fluids and plugs but I dont know which fluids he is talking about? Can someone guide me as to what I need to do or replace to get this motor up and running and get this boat in the water???

I plan on changing all the plugs and the lower unit fluid? SHould I be doing anything else before attempting to start. The boat has been sitting for years???

Re: NEED MAJOR HELP!!! Rookie here

Congratulations and welcome to the world of boating and to this forum! You sound a lot like myself when I first got by used boat that also has a Johnson 90hp. There are several things you need to do and you need to do them properly if you ever hope to get your engine running. Dont skip any of the steps or advice you see on here. Most of these guys are real pros (unlike myself :)

First, check out this thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

You will find the answer to most of your questions here.

Before you turn a screw or a nut, invest in the shop manual for your engine. This will pay for itself over and over and will show you how to do the procedures recommended in these threads.

A good source for the shop manual is :
www.outboardbooks.com

Finally, use the search feature for posts. Chances are someone has had the same problem along the way as you and you can find answers previosly posted. 95% of my questions are found this way and you dont have to wait for a reply!

If you get stuck, post your thread in the proper place and let us know what year/make/model your boat and motor are and folks will chime in!

Thanks for the info guys.

The floors are rotted and need to be replaced, can I just replace with with regular plywood from Home Depot? Does it have to be the pressure treated plywood?

Ideally you'd use marine grade plywood, but it's expensive and hard to find.

I used B/C exterior grade ply.

But there's a lot of steps involved...it'd be best if you start a separate thread in "Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics)" section of iboats.
