Ok guys,

1977 85 HP Evinrude

Rectifier toast. Burn't red wire and cracked bakelite seal. Will the boat run without the rectifier? With it disconnected it still won't start. (no spark on all 4)

Stator Specs:

Using digital automatic meter...

Yel/Gray to ground - open
Yel to ground - open
Yel to Yel/Gray 1.5 ohms

Sensor Specs:

Reading between...

Sensor wires 1/2 - 8 ohms
Sensor wires 3/4 - 8 ohms

Any red flags? Stator would seem good? Are the sensor readings low? What does this mean. CDI says they (sensors) should be 10-20 ohms.

Blk/Yel on Power pack open loop no ground kills on ign. circ.

Thanks! Where to next?

Map the rectifier wires and disconnect it before you start the engine again.
If the engine runs OK, you probably have not damaged anything but the rectifier.

The rectifier has nothing to do with the ignition system, but if the wires burn and fuse, allowing battery voltage to flow to the ignition system, it can destroy it. The rectifier is there to charge the battery, also sends signal to the tachometer.

I believe that the 10-20 is out of context because the sentence refers to the CDI part, not OEM.

I disconnected the rectifier and it will not run. Anyone have any ideas how to test a power pack?

First test is to disconnect the black and yellow wire from the number one screw on the power pack and do a spark test. Is the starter working?

You need 300RPM to get spark. It takes a fully charged powerful battery.

Check for spark with all spark plugs removed.

If the battery voltage got past the rectifier, it would most likely have caused damage under the flywheel and you can usually see it.

considering my findings the numbers seem somewhat within spec. do you agree?

starter works great.
strong steady crank speed w/new battery.

won't spark with blk/yel wire disconnected.

do I have to have a balanced puller to get the flywheel off?

You will need a puller, I still use a harmonic balancer with 3 grade 8 bolts because it always works. If you use force on the removal, apply only to the inner three bolt holes. Put a little grease on the point of the harmonic balancer's tip. Re-torque to 100-105 ft lbs when done.
