I need to take the flywheel off to get at the junk underneath it and i just cant think of any clever way of securing it without messing it up somehow... Is there a trick to it? I have to take one off a chrysler 105 model # on the plate inside the motor is 1059HF serial # 12850. Not sure on the 55 but it has the magnapower II ignition like the 105. anyways how the heck am i expected to grab ahold of that think and turn that nut with enough force to break it loose and not risk personal injury or damage to the flywheel?

***At your own risk*** I put the engine into forward gear and wrapped a rope around the prop clockwise and then around the cavitation plate, clockwise as well. I got the nut off but couldn't get the flywheel pulled. I tried a slide hammer, puller, hot water, and propane. My local boat shop did it for 1 hr labor, abut $107 after shop fees, fair IMO. I sanded the crank with 600 grit and put a light coat of AS before putting it back. Good thing because I had to remove it a little more than a year later to dona rebuild when #2 went bad due to overheating and this time around it came off easy! IIRC I put a flat head screwdriver between the starter and flywheel and it worked without incident but that would be at your own risk too since I don't know the official way.

Best way,impact wrench.
Second way, turn the starter bendix till it engages(battery unhooked or off) then a scredriver between the flywheel and the bendix.
Getting the flywheel off can be tricky too.
Spray some WD or PB Blaster on and around the nut.
Then some kind of puller? The 1/4-20 threads might pull out so don't freak if they do.Just drill to the next size and tap.
Sometimes they won't come off at all??? :(

A mid length socket wedged between the teeth of the flywheel and the top of the block. This is the simplest way, and works every time. I should add, that this works for the smaller hp Chrysler and Force motors up to at least 85hp. I can't remember if your block had an indent or raised spot to do this. The pic is of an 85hp.

@healey... NEVER grease the crankshaft nose where the flywheel rides. See the manual for instructions on how to lap the joint. Grease can and will cause issues, ie broken flywheel key, grease covered stator and trigger, I have seen both.

Hey Tater---I LIKE that one! I always used a crowbar wedged between the flywheel teeth and into the starter motor mount. But next time I'm trying your method. Fer Sure!

Hell: I think I'm going to make a special tool for that!

This .5 thick aluminum bar, 2? wide gets my job done due to the bolt heads. Other bars or tubing should work just as well.

I can also visualize a large oil filter strap type wrench with one or two bolts and nuts in the band to lock down in the flywheel?s teeth. Harbor Freight might have a strap wrench to start the tool.

Thanks and yikes! Luckily I haven't had any problems. I was worried when I took it off the second time because when I originally took it off it was because a stator screw backed out. I removed all screws and put RED threadlock on and and I was thinking I'd never get them out! To my surprise they came out easy thank God.

@healey.. no worries, you are not the first nor the last to grease the shaft. It is very tempting after you fight with a stubborn flywheel for a while. I bet I see at least 3 a year that have grease covered stators, and the owners say that they greased the shaft for the very same reason you did :)
@Frank.. thanks! it was a product of necessity. I was in the field working on a motor, and forgot my crowbar. I have been using this trick ever since. It also works for installing, and torquing the flywheel.
