1966 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp

I love to set limb lines at night for catfish, I have added some lights to the front of the boat to see the lines at night. These in addition to my interior lights and talk radio make for a quick battery drain. My Johnnyrude dosent have an alternator/generator, how would you get some extra power to make the lights last longer?

A gas genset is out of the question, so are additional batterys. Is there any way to add a alternator to this old workhorse?

DC

Hey DuckCo....

The older Rudes used belt driven generators which was an option back then. You would also need a regulator to keep from frying the battery. Best thing to do is locate a parts manual for the old girl and go from there. I believe you could find one, wait got to find the web site,,,,,,well...can't find it. Search for Ken Cook Co. They do republishing work for old manuals on JohnnyRudes. Should help or check out E-Bay. Hope we have helped.

Thanks for the info, anyone else heard of using a newer alternator on an older motor?

DC

Horsefly mentions here you can rig up a chevy sprint alternator (or Geo Metro?). It's really tiny, but it does take some skill to make up the bracket & pulley. I haven't tried it myself yet.

The 18hp Johnrudes never came with a generator and there was never one offered as a accessory. Much simpler & cheaper to bring along another battery, and rig them up with a daytime solar trickle charger to keep them topped off....
- Scott

agree with Chinewalker. Generator kits were for the 35s/40s. There would not be a bracket for the 18, nor (I think) a pulley on top of the flywheel. Dual batteries and a shore charger seems like the best option.

of course, that doesn't address the more creative ideas about rigging a small auto alternator....
