Get a used Kirby on ebay. Easily the best vacuum cleaner if you only use it as an upright. Connecting the hose is a pain.
I have no issues connecting the hose, or converting it to a smaller unit or a shampooer unit.

I know. Its just not as simple as the newer vacuums. My housecleaner refuses to do it since she didn't do it properly the first time and the drive belt fell off.

Thanks for all the Recos.I will pass them on to my bride.I have been told that there are many issues with using an upright .She has been looking at uprights.I assume since every third or 4th house has an upright at the curb on trash day, there must be a big downside.Charlie

They are probably all Hoovers with a Dyson or 2 as well.

We have a red one, when it comes out of the cupboard I go outside because the noise it makes annoys me. Personally I like the mini wolly mammoth the flintstones had.

Dyson 45 Animal. We have three dogs and that thing runs daily. (my wife is an OCD clean freak) It's now 5 yrs old and still under warranty. We've busted a couple of parts, been through belts etc. but Dyson replaces them no questions asked. We paid $545 for it five years ago. Works perfect to this day, I wouldn't hesitate to get another one should it drop dead. Light, versatile and WORKS!

Before we got our Rainbow, I duct taped and adapter together to connect an old Sear beater bar floor unit to my big red shop vac. THAT worked great! Noisy, but it sure would pull up dirt from deep inside any carpet.

After showing/selling Rainbows, we bought ours. Love it! Almost as good as the old shop vac/beater bar combination. Rainbows can be found on ebay, a lot cheaper than having one shown in your home!

And yes, we did show how much ALL bag type cleaners left behind.

Kirby's are built like a tank, just too bad they use a bag. If you could leave the bag off and run an exhaust hose outside, they may be one of the best machines ever built.
