...Chicks do NOT dig OMC stringers. As a matter of fact, most of them point and laugh when they see one.
... well, that explains a lot

Guy's it not the first time I've been called a idiot or a fool, and it won't be the last. The older I get the thicker my skin gets! ;-) I appreicate all the advice. I mean that with all my heart. I was taught when you don't know about something, go ask somebody with the knowledge that does. And you guys do. Guy's, your advice and that of my long time mec probably will save me untold amounts of money and time, not to mention stress. What attracted me to this pontoon was not the OMC motor and drive, but the boat itself. I wish it was around a 100 plus or minus horse outboard of any brand!! I am not a wealthy man. I was looking at the boat as something I could maybe fix up cheap. I have a Mariner 175 outboard, runs good, PAID FOR, on a old bass boat I was looking at hanging on the back of this pontoon. They made this pontoon with the outboard option when new. I know a 175 would push it, I just don't know if the transom would work. That's why I ask the question about filling in the transom and hanging a outboard on it. Maybe selling the OMC parts on Ebay (sounds like they are worth some money) to get some money to help with the new deck and carpet and seats. Used 28' pontoons go from 7k or 8k, on up to 30k. You guy's all confirmed what my long time mec told me about OMC. I should have never even questioned his knowledge (30 plus yrs), now I feel guilty. It's just that I liked the boat and it is/was in my budget. Shame I can't power it some other way. Thanks for all the replies!!!!!!! :)

Plus motor is to small for a 28'er. Might run 20mph. maybe.....

Let me tell ya my deal since I jsut ended up in your situation :D

I bought a 175 ski from the mother-inlaw fo 1k. I knew the block was blown, and I'm mechanicly adept. The only reason I bought the boat was because it's pretty much new and needs no restore, excepetion--engine. Definition of "new": No interior work needed, came with tralor, no rust bearings and seals good, I could throw this boat in the water and move arround with oars in confidence.

Engine repairs: Pull that crap and make it new. Finding the block was a chore, HOWEVER you can try and do a mercruiser conversion to it. If your looking at an outboard conversion good luck, It's a pontoon so it probably won't be as bad as sealing up a ski transom. (But I don't know) The 3.0L is everywhere but people want more for them than the V6. Look arround before you buy and see if you cna find a shippable dependable doner first. So far I've spend 1200 on the engine. KEEP IN MIND, that the new block is a .04 bore with a head job. I'm pretty much going to 0 hours. HOWEVER once I drop the engine in I won't have sealing issues like you're looking at.

So 2.2k so far and I don't have it in the water, but I'm not far. How much more work do you have than me, and I'm donig the work myself. Getting a shop that will work on the OMC will be difficult if not impossible; a machine shop for a block rebuild that I'm working on myself is not the same thing.

Biggest point I have is that I'm $500 away and I can still sell and break even if I wanted. What's the local desire for a pontoon, with an unservicable engine, rust, and other unknown issues going to resell for? I say stay below your re-sell value with repairs and your ok. Go over that and you will want to stick your head in the prop.

Best of luck to you!

This is your first boat and obviouslly first OMC that you don't even have in the water yet. You have no idea what headaches you are going to have with your Cobra let alone what this Stringer is going to have.

I would suggest to come back in another year and give your advice after the joy of OMC ownership.

Very true, but I think i'm entitled to speak from the information I've collected and the rebuild I'm currently performing. If the OP goes with the buy, I think he will be in a very similar situation if not an exact repeat. Why not share what I've accumulated thus far from my own experience?

The boat that the OP is lookng at has a completely different drive than you have. You haven't even run your Cobra drive to see if it even works have you? How is it even remotely the exact situation.

As of 10 days ago you believed the 3.0 was an obsolete engine!

buying cheap boat, unknown conditions, hard to find OMC parts and service, 302 series engine

My OMC 3.0 is obsolete, the 3.0 block isn't. Even the one I picked up had different piston heads in it. The whole thread topic is geared around buying an OMC engine setup knowing that it's obsolete. I am sharing my input on buying an OMC engine setup that's obsolete. I never mentioned stern drive.

I have ran my cobra drive and is does work, FYSA.

For someone who likes to throw salt at posters, you sure don't know how to be a good neighbor. The fact that you went looking for my thread, without even offering advice on it goes to show what kind of person you are. (*cough* Troll *cough) According to your logic I guess the next time I stub my toe, I'll have to wait a year until I tell people to watch where they step.

feel free to argue some more tho ;)

Your engine is not obsolete! You can buy a GM crate engine today that will bolt right up to your drive or the stringer drive in this thread. OMC has zero to do with engine. They don't make one part of the engine. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

All advice to the OP in this thread would be the same regardless of what engine was attached to the drive because its the drive system we are concerned with. Could be a 5.7L V8 and advice would be the same.

As far as giving you advice on your other thread, Howard was giving you plenty of advice...sometimes the same advice over and over. I saw your other thread long before this one came along.

Some threads are destined for closure. This is one of them.

Sound of lock closing.
