Re: Need opinions for my neighbors problem...

No need for pictures! My neighbor pulled up the plywood floor today and it is terminal! Stringers rotted to the point you could literally squeeze water out of them! I broke off a 6" piece by hand! Also has major cracks in the inside of the hull. I do not know how it did not break in half. We are now helping him shop for a use hull in good condition to transfer his motor to. Thanks again for all the input!

Ok, here's the pictures I took. It is BAD! the Prev. owner did a real number on this one! What you cannot see in the photos are the stress cracks in the bottom! 1st pic is the "repairs" the PO did to the rear stringers before laying down a new plywood(non-treated plywood!). 2nd pic is the stringers in front of the console, notice the missing piece in the center stringer, which, the missing piece is the 3rd pic, the piece that I broke off with no effort! Also, in the center picture you can also see that about 6"-8" of the front of the outer stringer is missing. I broke that piece off by hand as well!!! It really is BAD!!! Most definitely Junk!!!

By the way, the "repair braces were made out of 1"x2" untreated pine held in place with drywall screws and clear silicon!!!!! As I said, we are trying to help him find a GOOD used hull!!!

Re: Need opinions for my neighbors problem...

Seems like it is working for very little investment so far. I have recently been doing a lot of work to my CC and love it. Depending on the make, some weight relocation and some holes for water to drain just might keep him boating until he decides what to do. Definitely pull the floor or cut some holes to be covered later with round deck covers to investigate. Is it a liner hull or roll gunnel? Mine is a roll gunnel which makes doing any stringer repair a lot more labor intensive.

For that amount of money he is a winner either way. If it is safe, I would run it till the gel coat wears off.

Not only no BUT HELL NO. If the boat is listing that hard to the left, the problem needs to be found immediately. I wouldn't even consider taking that boat into the water again with it listing that hard. Broken stringers = No support for the hull, one big wave, and the hull cracks open= A whole world of hurt REAL quick. Cut a hole in the floor find the problem, and repair it or scrap the hull sell the motor and make a profit.

Sorry I got this in way late but I think the pictures support my statement, thank you for being a safe responsible boater.

I also have a suspiscion your friend may want to consider looking for a new job it seems as if his boss may be trying to kill him.

Stress cracks can be repairable. Just gut the whole thing and rebuild it. You might get lucky and find a good hull though. Good luck. If you rebuild properly, you will end up with something that will last a lifetime.

Re: Need opinions for my neighbors problem...

He actually rode on his boss's bost today and met us for lunch at one of our favorite little restaurant on the St. Johns River. His boss was apologetic to an extent, but then again, he got a great running Yamaha 90 snd a nice aluminum trailer out of the deal for $300! My buddy had no complaints, just glad it didn't break in half! Now he just has to find a nice, solid hull to transfer all his stuff too. We have already decided to chop this hull up with a chain saw and haul the pieces to the dump! Should be fun! I am confident we'll find a nice hull in his budget and have him back on the water in a safe/solid boat by spring!

Be careful when boat shopping. Boats w/out good running OB's are parked for a reason. Perhaps not in as dire condition as this boat, but often NOT in solid/safe operable condition. Even if the seller has done a good bit of work to it. There are countless threads w/ new plywood decks that hide similar conditions.

Having found this hull to be inoperable, should help in identifying how & where to look on the next boat. Hopefully a good candidate can be found...........

We've got a good bit of experience with boats and weeding out the junk, and he's willing to be patient, so we will find him a good hull.

If he is a hard worker and patient that boat is totally repairable and will be better than new with less than half the cost. Just depends on whether this is the style of boat he really wants or not.
