First timer for motor ownership (I do sail), buying a OB boat for myself, kids, running aground (get the picture?) Boat is located in my area NJ/NY and it's been quite cold. Motor is 100hp Evinrude.

Let's assume worst case scenario and it was not winterized. I've learned enough at this point to look for cracked head, water in oil, etc. Have not yet seen it personally and of course will check other mechanicals/hull etc. as well as can be done in this weather.

There are pics of the boat at http://www.medicaltranscription.com/boat.jpg and if anyone has the time to look them over I would appreciate anyone's take on this...

Walk away?
Age of boat/motor (seller doesn't know)
Motor tilted properly for winter?
Anything else?

Thanks in advance

I'm no expert, but if your worried about the engine being cracked due to freezing, this is unlikly. If the engine was stored in an upward position, as it is shown in your pictures, it would drain itself when removing it from the water. I'd be more concerned with a compression check. If the motor has not been fogged when put up for winter, you should be concerned with corrosion of internal parts. Did the owner fog the motor at the end of the season?

Current owner was not the user of the boat and I will certainly ask about the fogging. But assuming worst case and it was not fogged, are there signs I should look for? Rust?

Any opinion on motor age?

First thing I would do is ask owner to slap some muffs on that baby, squirt some two stroke oil in the cylinders, and fire it off.Otherwise have it checked out by a reputable outboard mechanic before securing purchase.See if it will run at all first.Rig looks pretty clean from the pics.

Thanks, good advice, and looking forward to more... like age of boat/motor? Any guesses?

I love boat lingo. I assume you're not talking earmuffs? Perhaps I should have mentioned that I need to read "Outboard Motors for the Complete Idiot".

I'm already checking out marine repair in the area to see if they could do a compression check while I wait. How much should that cost me?

You all know so much and tonight, I'm a sponge. I appreciate everyone's input.

Howdy, BWS.

Since you haven't told us the type and year of the boat, year of the engine or asking price there is no way we can give you useful opinions if it is a good buy or not.

The tilt on the engine is bad news. It should be vertical to allow any water in the system to drain.

Get the engine tested UNDER LOAD before you even think of buying.

Good luck. :)

Flush muffs-Means of adapting garden hose water source to lower unit waterpump intake for running engine.Adapter consists of a forked bar with two rubber cups. One of the cups has a garden hose fitting.
Typical charges for running compression test mat be around $50-$60 per hour charge.Likely minimum 1 hour charge.Difficult to give exact year without model number.Looks like it may be late 70's model.

BWS,

I believe that engine, judging from the cowl, is a 1972.

If it is an electric shift-I'd pass.
