need opinions on motor

Im looking at 98 johnson 15 hp electric start motor and im wondering how much i should offer for it. It still looks brand new and i have know idea how much its worth. Anyone have any idea? Thanks

well i will tell you it would cost $3-500 to put electric start on a rope start version of that motor. i don't deal in newer motors, but my guess is atleast $1,000-1500.

How much is the asking price? We all know about what it's worth but what's most important is what it's worth to you, and what it's worth to the owner. I think a fair price for a '98 model in really nice shape would be worth about a 1000 bucks. But considering that is a very desirable hp and the fact that it is a Johnson may make someone decide to pay more. It is a really nicely made motor, by the way. You have good taste! It probably cost about 1800 brand new in '98 if the owner got a reasonably good deal, but maybe as much as 2200 if he didn't. A ten year old johnson 15 that has low hours of use is practically new to me.

hes selling the motor with a 74-76 lund deep hull that was repainted about 5 or 6 years ago and is in pretty good condition. Its been kept inside and has been taken care but hes asking 2000 for both. Iam wondering if this is a good deal cause iam considering buying both.

I forgot to mention that its 15 or 16ft long. Does this sound like a good deal or would i be better off just making a offer on the motor alone

i think i would do a test drive, it may be under powered for the boat.

I talked to my buddy and i guess the boats a 14ft deep hull. I have been out in the boat and the motor powered it pretty decently. Im just having trouble deciding if its all worth 2000 together cause the nada boat guide only valued the motor at 600 and the boat at 600 and the trailer at 150 which im not sure is very accurate. What do you guys think? Thanks for all the previous replys

I think it largely depends where you are. Local markets are different everywhere. Here a decent 14' lund on a useable trailer and with that motor, he'd get his $2K for it. He'd actually probably do better to break it up and sell it piece by piece.

14' lund in reasonable shape $800
trailer in useable shape $500
motor $1200 (maybe more?)

That's my quick guess for what I'd be asking for each of those items here. That would be advertised as "firm" prices, and what I'd expect to get. I'd expect them to sell fast at those prices and total $2500. Could probably fatten those prices up a bit and still sell them without much trouble.... but maybe not where you are.

I live in Minnesota so I'm not sure how much the prices would differ from here and there.

nada is trash when it comes to boats and motors over 5 year old. i have no idea where they are getting their info. think what it would cost you to buy the same thing new. how many thousand are you saving, to get a boat that will do the same thing an new one does, other than depreciate the minute you buy it.

It's your friend's boat you're wanting to buy? I would think that would mean you know the boat and motor well as far as it's history and such. That would make it worth even more to me. I think for a 14ft. boat, newer motor, and trailer, that 2000 would be a reasonable price. And since you know the boat, you know if the motor is trustworthy or not.

I think iam gonna go ahead and get it. I guess my buddy bought it from his dad who owned it since it was new so i know its been taken care of and the the motor runs real nice. I was gonna pass on it after seeing the book value from nada but i knew the motor had to be worth more than they said so i joined this forum to get some other opinions. Thanks for all the advice

you have to remember these are entertain and relaxation dollars being spent. not investment dollars.

I think you're making a good decision, and I truly believe that you could run your new boat for several years and get your money back out of it as long as it's still running good, which it should be. I also think you'll easily get 2000 dollars worth of fun out of it. And NADA is absolutely useless on old stuff, just like everyone else said. I think those NADA books are sometimes used by dealers to put the britches on unsuspecting folks who don't know how much something costs. The motor you are buying is one of the best motors to buy, and of course to sell. Everybody likes 'em. You'll have to post a pic of your new rig.
