I am looking at this boat. the owner knew it was an 4cly 140 hp I/O. Probbaly a mercruser. Its got a few issues. i have talked to the owner and he told me that the Gimble bearing was bad, needed a coulpe freez plugs replaced and that the throttle control/shifter was not working (he thinks its wiped out inside the controll box) I have looked into the replacement of the gimble bearing ( in the adults only section). I am very cappable at repairs (not a pro but I can get things done). The freez plugs should be easy (if they are easy to reach) what is ya'lls thoughts? I think its a great price. The owner did say that the tires were trash on the trailer.

I am looking for an affordable family boat. I have a 50hp fishing boat but it lacks the power for family fun. Its great for fishing just not family fun

I would suspect of why the freeze plugs need replaced. It they are popped out due to the motor not being properly winterized then the block and/or manifold is most certainly cracked also.

Howdy,

I suspect that this guy is not telling you all that's wrong with the engine.

"Freeze plugs" DO NOT "pop out" because they "protected" anything.

They 'pop out' because someone DID NOT drain the water in the block and it froze. That usually cracks the block "freeze-plugs" or not.......

While you probably can easily replace the gimbal bearing, control,

If the block is cracked, you will have to replace the engine.......A long block 3.0L engine is about $2000 in round numbers.

There is no automotive "equivalent" for the 3.0L engine.

My guess is that he KNOWS the block is cracked, bought it that way, and wants to pass it on.

Looking at the boat, assuming the drive is in "OK", usable condition,

Would it be worth about $2500 with a good engine installed?

If the answer is no, you should keep looking.

On the other hand, if you can install new freeze plugs and pressure check the block BEFORE you buy, it might be worth $500.

My guess is, the owner won't want you to do that!!!

agreed, beware....if the bearing is smoked it leads me to believe that's not the only problem. If the outdrive is toast then you're gonna spend big money!

The guy is getting rid of it because it is too expensive for him to fix everything...also leads me to believe that his maintenance schedule (if even existing) was not so good
