hey guys, good to have yalls advice, im in the process of buying a boat from my girlfriends dad to upgrade from my current bowfishing boat, its an '84 16' bass tracker pro-16. the boat is in great shape, but the trailer needs a few repairs, (small spots to be cleaned or possibly replaced and needs new carpet on runners, new winch and wheel bearings) and the 45hp mercury has a few problems, it wont run faster than like 10 mph which i feel like could be somethin real simple but i havent actually ran it or looked at it personally. and the wiring is in dire need of replacing. i bluebooked it at around 1100 so i offered him 1200 and he said he is lookin for closer to 2000!!! thats a big negotiating gap for a broke college kid! so do yall think im offerin too little or is he askin too much?

Well, my personal opinion is that if you want to stay on good terms with your girlfriend I'd let someone else buy that boat. For one thing you're just guessing that the engine is going to be easy to fix, but you don't have any real information on what's wrong. If it's down on compression you're likely looking at something major. New ignition parts aren't cheap either. Re-wiring a boat is a lot harder than you might imagine - for much of the time you'll be twisted into a ball while standing on your head to be able to both gain access and see what you're working on. Plus the fact that the wiring is so bad is an indication of poor maintenance.

He's way too high, and frankly if it needs that much I'd probably just keep looking. That "somethin real simple" could be simple, or it could turn into something really expensive. That thing will require a significant cash and time investment before it's anything you can rely on. There's no shortage of thirty year old Basstrackers out there. If you do end up buying it your price is more than fair.

lol good point! but im thinkin he'll come down some because he's paralyzed from the waist down so i help him out alot around the house these past three years. and i know theyve taken good care of it for the year that theyve had it, but idk about the previous owner, do yall know how complex the wiring is on this particular boat? im certified through john deere in electronics but i havent even looked under the console yet. thanks for the opinions, i was hoping somebody would tell me hes too high! lol

Make sure you do a compression check on the motor. If it's good, then the problem should be fixable. I think your price is fair for a boat with issues. In my area though, those types of fishing rigs always seem to have an inflated price (it would help to know where you're located) and in great running condition could go for as much as $3500.

oh and the reason im saying the wiring is bad without lookin under the console is simply because none of the lights or pumps are gettin power, only the engine circuit

im about 45 minutes north of houston, tx. on lake livingston. and the engine seems to have good compression, and it ran great until one day his son went to drive it and noticed the problem, but i havent personally seen it run since this problem started, im betting its ignition though, or possibly a prop problem????

Well, boat wiring isn't rocket science, but working on it can be a gigantic pain because of the sheer difficulty of getting to it.

Maybe you could work out some sort of arrangement, maybe something like if you go ahead and fix all that needs fixing he'll take a percentage of the cost of parts off his selling price.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking that boat in decent running condition might be worth around $1500 or so (but then again I only pay attention to boat pricing in my area). It is a pretty old boat with a relatively small engine.

i agree wrench, ive brought that deal up in conversation with him but hes the kind of guy to take evrything to a shop to have work done, im a tractor mechanic so in his eyes im not capable of working on a boat lol. is there any way a problem with the prop could cause the running problem? ive never had any problems out of the 8hp nissan thats on my current boat so i have no idea about the clutch (if there is one?) or any other lower unit components on a boat engine

Re: need opinions on value?

You might want to do some investigating, like take it for a test run yourself, but it's possible a spun hub could keep power from being transferred to the prop. If that were the problem the engine would run ok in every respect, but the boat just wouldn't go anywhere very quickly. The way to check for that would be to mark the center of the hub and the prop, take it for a test run, and see if the marks have moved.

Let's be objective here:
1. buying a boat from a friend, a relative, an inlaw, a girlfriend's father (getting progressively worse here) is usually a bad idea, especially if the boat already has problems.
2.Trailer needs work--not a big deal but a couple $100's, and time off the water.
3. Boat needs work (electrical) which may be a few bucks, and time off the water, and PITA work.
4. Motor has unknown problems with serious effects. Time off the water to get it fixed. As people here guess what it could be, you see it could be one (or more) of 100 things--spun prop ($100 to fix) carbs, who knows what else. But you are starting with a broken down 27 year old motor. I'd say never buy one unless you are financially able to replace it tomorrow.
5. bluebook on a 27 year old boat is meaningless--but at least it worked in your favor.
6. You are a broke college kid. Nothing wrong with that; I used to be one* until I grew into a broke college graduate and on to a broke adult. But the purchase price is a down payment; you won't be operating that boat unless you have several $100 more available NOW to spend (priced insurance lately? Taxes and registration? Storage?)
7. Your seller isn't interested in working with you or doing favors based on the relationship. (Don't let him finance you!). Since he has unrealistic expectations, the two of you will never be happy with the deal--even if you gave him his price. Let him try to sell it, and if he gets his price, good for him; if not, let him come back to you. But be nice; tell him his boat is way too nice for you in your situation.
8. There are lots of other $1,200 basic hull/trailer/outboards out there that would be great for a college student. Go for a basic jon boat. They are everywhere.

Re: need opinions on value?

lol well i agree with everything you stated, but i do have enough for registration fees and such cause im payin that on my flat bottom now anyways, i just only work on weekends so im tryin to get the boat for as little as possible so my wallet doesnt take as big of a hit, i know a boat has very high potential to be a money pit, especially an old one, but i just cant stand to pass up offers like this, lol ever since i drove it when it ran right ive wanted it. i think what im gonna do is see if he'll let me look at the motor to see if i can get an idea of what it is (ignition or fuel delivery or lower unit problems) and go from there on my price. im just ready to step up to a boat that can get me across our 90,000 acre lake in lesss than a day lol, and a more stable boat for bowfishing and running trotlines, and im tired of constant caulking and re-riveting lol. i appreciate all the input guys and sorry if it sounds like im trying to argue every point yall make, just tryin to clear certain things up

Re: need opinions on value?

You offered $100 OVER the supposed value of the boat and he's balking? Keep in mind that blue book or NADA values, as inaccurate as they often are, are based on equipment in good operating condition. Neither the boat nor its trailer fall into this category. It would be best to find a gracious way to drop the whole idea, IMO. Unless you want to have and ex-girlfriend instead of a girlfriend.

A fishing boat like that is like an older rust-free 4x4 pickup truck.........book value means jack.

I don't mix business and family/friends. It seems to always come back to bite you in the @#$. As a broke college kid, just what do you plan on doing for your girlfriend when you pour every bit of money and time into the boat (other than studying real hard for good grades)? A boat in need is just like a woman in need. You will be making choices, and one will have to outweigh the other. Welcome to our world of boating!
