Not a lot of info in the owners manual what is your question? The service manual has more info and is more helpful for trouble shooting. You can get both from

If the OMS (oil mixing system) hasn't been removed from your outboard get rid of it. Remove the oil tank and the mixing unit underneath it an connect the two fuel lines together and run 50:1 premix in your fuel tank

I got it without the OMS, what happened to it that it was removed?
I do find that the motor has a strange knocking sound when it's running at a low rpm. But aside from that it runs very good.
I wonder if the previous owner had problems and took it out but maybe had oil issues before it was removed?

The OMS system that came on the small triples were garbage. All of the oil injection parts are NLA so that tells you right there how bad they were. The check valves in the mixing unit would fail allowing gasoline into the oil tank which would dilute the oil down to nothing.

I would be concerned about the low speed knock. You might want to tear that engine down and take a look inside to make sure everything is tight.

I checked the compression and all 3 are reading 110 PSI

I get the feeling that it's piston slap, will this motor last or is this going to blow on me when I'm in the water?

They are a good engine and it should last with no issues. My mechanic thinks they are one of the best outboards ever built by OMC unfortunately OMC botched the oil injection system.

Your compression is good but that knock does bother me because it shouldn't be doing that. I don't think it was ran without oil because your compression is good and even across all three cylinders unless the previous owner rebuilt the engine. Does it look like it has been disassembled at some point? Does it knock when it is cold or when warmed up or all the time when idling?

No it does not look like the block has been taken apart.
The first time I took it out it only made the knocking sound when cold at idle, but the second time it was always knocking at idle.
I'll take it out this weekend and pay more attention.
Maybe its not even knocking, but it's a two stroke and I can't really see anything else making such a knock.
I did decide to to buy a gallon of XD-50 maybe this better oil will help?
I'll report back after the weekend of fishing!

If you haven't changed the plugs buy a fresh set of Champions QL86c and gap them .030 I had NGKs in mine when I bought it and it runs much better on the Champs. Use the good oil and you could also mix 24:1 for one tank. It won't hurt the outboard if you run the extra oil.

That's strange the plugs in there now are QL77JC4
Is that wrong?

Yes they are the wrong plugs. You should be using the QL86

thanks I just have to verify my model # because when i order parts for some reason the dealer keeps telling me is a 97 yet the sticker shows 96.
Should I be ok with this manual?

What is your model #? You should be okay with the 96 manual even if it is a 97 OMC wasn't one to make a lot of changes between model years and 97 was only the second year for the small triples.

There were a number of them available on there, maybe another seller will be more reasonable. search "1996 Johnson 25 manual" make sure it's the service manual and not the parts manual.

I purchased the owners manual and the service manual from http://www.marineengine.com/parts/parts.php I paid more than what it would have been from ebay but I had my manual in 4 or 5 days and paid 9 dollars for shipping to Ottawa, On they ship priority post. You don't want anyone to ship into Canada via Fedex or UPS because they will nail you for brokerage fees. Plus they took Paypal. Sometimes it is worth paying the extra money.

The correct plugs are QL86C for a 1996 25 and 35 triple.

The 20/25/30 twins used the QL82C spark plug.

That's not a listed model # for the 96 manual.
So it it really a 1997 model then?
