It is a 1997 model and still uses the QL86C plugs :) If you compare the schematics from 1996 and 1997 I doubt you will see any differences though.

WOW thanks for all the help everyone!

My Model # is J25RMEUR

That's not a listed model # for the 96 manual.
So it it really a 1997 model then?

About half of the '97 MODELS were made in '96, just like cars. Your manufacture date is NOT the Model number. Your engine is a '97 Model.

If the motor had QL77JC4 and it required QL86C then the 77 are hotter could the sound have been preignition?

Maybe first things first is to get rid of the 77s then see how it runs. Hopefully your engine is fine and the wrong plugs have caused the issue. You should also have a fuel filter on the starboard side of the engine towards the back. You might want to change that also while you working on it. The filter from from BRP dealer is like $8.00 or so.

OK changed the filter and put the correct plug, I'll get her out on the weekend hopefully and report back.

Ok so after doing all this work, the motor still has a slight knocking sound but it runs really well.
Only happens at idling rpm.
I was looking up piston slap on the web and apparently aside from GM's having it Johnson also had the problem!

The only other thing you could try is a de-carbon treatment. I use the BRP two stroke engine tuner (you could also use Sea Foam) which works really well for getting the carbon out of engines, I primarily use it to keep my two stroke lawn boy running. BRP also sells a separate injector nozzle for the spray can so that you can use the Schrader valve on the port side of the intake manifold the nozzle is also handy to have in the fall when it comes time to fog the engine.

Other than that I say run it you can always tear it down this fall and see what is knocking inside. Gasket kits aren't too expensive and if you have to change out a bearing it is better to do it before it lets loose and causes all kinds of destruction.

I already tried almost half a can of seafoam in a 6 gal can and it did nothing for the knock. except make a lot of smoke at idle/trolling speed.
I bought a gal of xd-50 because I thought it would help make the motor last longer and was told it would smoke less, but I didn't really notice the motor smoking much when I was using the xd-30.
Will it last longer with the xd-50 and will it really keep the internals cleaner?
It's not very loud, I only notice it because I'm paying attention or else it not to bad.

Synthetic should keep it cleaner with less carbon build up. I would run the xd-50 at 40:1 a little extra lubricant won't hurt anything. Your knock might not be anything then as these engines are very quiet even running on muffs they aren't bad. With a new motor you also tend to listen to ever little noise they make too.
