I have a 1972 19 ft. Larson I want to repaint.Is it possible to roll the paint on? and if so what kind of paint should I use? and can anyone tell me the steps I should take to do the job? thanks for anyones help. The first time I have done anything like this

You can absolutely roll the paint on. Many of us have done it. There are lots of paints to choose from. Rustoleum, Petit Easypoxy, Interlux Brightsides, etc etc.

I think that these three questions (at least) have to be asked before you decide on a paint system:

1) How much do you want to spend?
2) How long does it have to last?
3) Is it above-waterline only, or are you painting below-waterline also?

I would buy a cheap spray gun($50.00) Rent or Borrow a compressor if you dont have 1 & paint it using an automotive paint, like a single stage urathane, Probally cost you $150-200 for the materials but it will last along time & wont fade as fast as the cheaper paints.
Using a roller will look like shat unless you wet sand it & polish it which wil take days.
I've been a Certified automotive Refinisher for close to 25 yrs & have painted plenty of Boats!

Hello CWD..

Now what I would do..

1. Wash the boat Well ! ( not your boat slip..just your boat ).
2. Sand your paint area with 120 grit. Wash again after..
3. Get yourself a good Paint Gun ( about 500 bucks ( 200 on eB )).
4. Buy 200 bucks in 2 part 545 epoxy primer.
5. Tape and Mask off surrounding areas not to be primed.
6. Acetone wash and Prime...clean gun Well with acetone.
7. Sand primer with 320 grit.
8. Clean .. clean clean again..
9. Mask with freash film and tape.
10. Spend about 300 bucks or so on Awlcraft or Imron Top Notch paint.
11. Tack rag..wet floor..and spray ( tricky this part is ) 3 coats of paint.
12. Remove masking as soon as you can without letting said masking flop in your new paint job. Enjoy new paint job.

OR...

You can prep..roll and tip something ( 50 bucks ).
I cant tell you how though.. never done it..

This way is the Top Line.. you want something in the Middle..then I would suggest you read not only the Vast support here on Iboats..but the product your thinking of putting on your boat.

Remember.. Research is everything and you have one chance ( well not really because you can allways strip your topcoat off and go for plan B .. but thats kinda more pricey ).

Low end would be wash and rattle can with Fusion..

Interlux have a product called Perfection... It's a two pack that has been engineered for Brush and Roller application. It can be sprayed and this can save time, but if you have to brush and roll this is the best i have found for it.

The amount of steps will vary depending on what coatings are on the Larson now. I'm not familiar with this boat but for existing two pack in good condition or Gelcoat that is still sound you can sand and apply the Perfection Undercoat, then sand back and apply teh Perfection GLoss.

The Undercoat uses the same Brushing technology as the topcoat, so while it does not flow out quite as well as the topcoat, it gives you a practise run.

WHen applying the GLoss by roller, you have to allow it to cure and then sand it again prior to the next coat for the best possible finish.
This is because if you apply the 2nd coat while the 1st coat is tacky it will draw the solvent out of the 2nd coat and reduce it's ability to flow. If you wait untill the 1st coat has cured the 2nd coat wont bond unless you sand.

I found best results were by applying the topcoat with a two roller technique where i used one roller to apply the paint, and a 2nd roller with only a very small amount of paint in it used to effectivly tip the product. FOr large areas it's easier with two people but i did the bottom of a 18'r on my own with no problems.

Because of the sanding required you effectivly get a practise run, you can sand any blemishes out of the 1st coat before the 2nd coat and you can practise on something small to get a feel for it.

As the others say, Spraying is quicker and easier. But if you want to Brush this can give fantastic results. If you do decide to Spray then stick with Yacht Dr advise and go for Awlcraft from Awlgrip

Reading again.. Re-paint... was it painted or just gelled thats faded ( I see alot of elders out there that just needs a good hard buff out ) ..

Or do you want a color change ?
