That rod is what changes the gears, hope you didnt remove it.

It's called a shift shaft. Manual 14 has it's discriptions (on the next page) all messed up.
If you look at page 3B-49 you will see how to reinstall it if you did remove it. Not a big deal really, you have to pull it out to change the shift shaft seals and bushing assembly. You just need to get it back in so when turned all the way clock wise, it point straight forward.

gotcha....i moved it a little and then the prop turned and splines didnt so i tried to turn it all the way forward and they engaged...i have to have it all the way forward to reinstall correct?

Yes. If you tilt the drive forward and put some ccw pressure on the prop it will be hard in forward gear. Then just put the shaft on facing straight forward. On all MC drives you always put it in forward before removing upper or lower drive. It's just easier that way.
