My buddy has a 1988 GT 150 that is giving us a bit of a problem. Sometimes the motor runs ok,then sometimes if will not pull top rpms. We are pretty sure it is the stator. He has a manual and it calls for 950 ohms +/- 15..We get approx 750 on left bank and 850 on right bank with motor cold. After it is warmed up,they both go up approx 200 ohms. Is this normal. This puts one bank where it should be,but the other one 100 over. Weare thinking he needs a stator. Are these things worth rebuilding,,and if so,who does them. If not,is there any decent generics out there. Is there a web site for OMC parts. Any and all info much appreciated.

Assuming that the stator is a 35 amp stator, is there a sticky like substance dripping down from the large black coils.... the coils at the rear of the stator? If so, yes the stator is faulty and requires replacing.

It looks like some kind of goo melted out at one time or another,,I think this motor was overheated major at one time. Joe,,is this normal for the ohms reading to go up like this when it gets hot. Also,I see that we can get stators on I boats,is this his best deal.

The overheating of a 35 ampere stator is not directly related to the engine itself overheating. The heat generated under the flywheel of a 35 ampere stator equipped engine is what eventually causes the black coils to melt down..... and it will eventually happen again at some time in the future. As I ststaed previously, if either or both of those black coils have dripped that substance down on the powerhead, replace the stator.

When it starts to fail, it may provide the necessary voltage to the powerpack to engage the ignition BUT when hot a voltage drop exists which results in weak or non existent ignition. How hot does it get? After running for about 5 or 10 minutes, try placing your hands on top of that flywheel.

I have no direct connection with "iboats" or its sales department.
