I've recently obtained a 1975 Ranger II bass boat, complete with original 1975 Johnson 85hp outboard. Upon undertaking the restoration project, I've discovered that the engine itself is in AMAZINGLY good shape, albeit a gas HOG!!

The engine has the old rotary-type steering system, which fits the old boat to a "T", but while taking a test run down the local river, I cut the wheel too sharp to the right, hit a stump, and bent the steering cable end (tilt tube rod). I've decided to replace the entire steering kit with one from right here at iboats.com, but I can't for the life of me find a friggin' tilt tube for this engine.. or any engine for that matter!! Can someone PLEASE give me a clue as to where to look?!?

'preciate it.

Love,
Ex

Can you cut that end off of the cable (rather than draw it thru the tilt tub) and save the tilt tube itself ?

DHP

Re: Need Parts for old Johnson!!

Oh I've already removed the old steering cable and *tried* to straighten it. I succeeded to an extent, but the steering is way too tight and cumbersome. The old tilt tube is so badly corroded and rusted that, rather than try to clean and polish it, I'd pretty much decided to replace it.. until my uncle who owns a machine shop said it'd be no problem to bore it out a little and restore it to factory condition.

I looked at that site, but no tilt tubes there. I guess they just don't make those anymore!

I do have another question, though.. what would cause this engine to require 3-5 shots of starting fluid to kick off other than it's age? Once warmed up, it runs perfectly. It's just that initial startup and warming period that it spits and sputters alot and dies. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ex

Exodus 3-5 shots of starting fluid = go get new motor. Starting fluid has NO lubricants and will kill your motor. STOP doing that immediately and fix the problem. It is most likely needing a carb rebuild.

if you must spray to start, use premixed gas and oil, in a spray or squeeze bottle. starter fluid equals a rebuild at the least. use the search funtion at the top of this page "awakening a sleeping outboard" save your self some headaches, and know you have a reliable motor. welcome to iboats.
