Hi, and thanks for looking. I am about to purchase a QD-23R sn 2242981 ($75 okay?), but am having difficulty finding active parts. I did find twin city's web site, but it was hard to navigate looking for parts (I didn't have my GPS hooked up to my computer;) I have also seen the parts manual available at kencooks.com (what a price for that service manual, huh), but what good is a part number (usually on the part anyway) without a supplier. I did a search here on the mod# and only came up with limited and dated information. Thanks for any help with a parts source.
Patrick

Welcome to the forum Patrick,

Depending on the parts you need you could try Maxrules.com or Featherweightoutboards.com. For the manual keep an eye on Ebay. As for the parts catalog the exploded engine diagrams come in very handy at times.

Good Luck :)

If you don't mind the service manual on CD, acmeoutboards.com has a good price. The manual covers a bunch of models so it's quite thick. I guess that justifies the price.
I don't see any '62 parts manuals on ebay but there's a couple '61s. Use these search terms:
(10, 10hp) (evinrude, johnson) manual

(Evinrudes and Johnsons were the same except for paint & cowls)

Many parts are still available and there are even aftermarkets suppliers of them. Ignition, carb kits, water pump parts, seal kits, etc. If you're after something particular just ask and we'll be able to point you in the right direction.

This is a few years prior to yours but it might be of some interest:
http://1958evinrude10hp.0catch.com/Evinrude1.htm

Check the engine for good compression before laying out the money (no more than 10% varience between cylinders.) It would be good to check the lower unit oil for signs of water intrusion & hear it run and such too.

Re: Need parts info for 62 Seahorse10

Thanks for the replies. Good info! The engine does have some oil leaking from the drain/fill plug, but it looks clean. I will drain it to look for water l8r 2day (I have unlimited access to the engine). The person I am buying it from found it in the garage of a forclosed house (he cleans them out for money). It is on a wooden stand, apparently made for the engine, and is in the vertical position. There's no way of knowing how long it's been sitting. As for starting it, it won't. It is currently at a friends house, who has looked at it breifly. He checked spark and compression, both are good. As for why it won't start, he says he cannot feel the carb pulling any air, and assumes it's reed valves are stuck. I guess before I buy it I should do a little more internal investigation, I fell though, that for $75, I can get that back in just parting it out if needed. It is externally in great shape.
Please share your thoughts. And thanks again!
Patrick

Sounds great to me. If you've got good compression, IMO you've got a viable engine. Anything else isn't a whole lot of money to fix.

You can be certain you'll have to change the water pump impeller. They need to be switched out every 2 or three years notwithstanding use. This is a critical part (overheating will ruin the engine) and degrades over time.
There's a really common issue with spark where it'll jump a spark plug gap (.030") just fine, but the spark will fail under compression. Check with about a 3/8" gap and make sure you can draw an arc over that. If you can do that on each cylinder, spark is fine.

You really won't feel the carb sucking air on a 2-stroke when you just pull it over with the pull start. It is only a miniscule pressure at those speeds since a lot leaks out the exhaust ports. Even at 1000 rpm the pulse is only a few psi.
Probably the carb is gummed up with old stale fuel and will need rebuilding. To bypass the carb, fill up a spray bottle with pre-mix (24:1 regular gas and TC-W3 outboard oil) spray it down the throat (choke open) and give it a pull or two (choke closed). Do not ever use commercial starting fluid unless it explicitly says for use in 2-strokes. You need the oil in there, especially if it's been sitting.

If the reeds have gum on them, the pre-mix will probably clean it fine. Reeds on these engines are very seldom a problem.

There is a local shop in my area that has a pretty good used parts selection for older motors and a lot of new parts still in inventory too. Drop me an e-mail if ya want and I will get you in touch.
