Hello, I am new here. I just bought a 1984 Chris Craft Scorpion 230. My dad bought this boat new and I bought it back from a friend he sold it to in '91. We had a lot of good times on it here in Va. on SML. The boat is in excellent shape but the sides need to be repainted. My part time job is restoring chevy muscle cars and I have done quite a few bc/cc paint jobs. However, I have no fiberglass experience. How should I go about painting the sides? What prep should I do? What paint is best?
Thanks for your help!!

Welcome to iboats!

You can use two part urathane spray, Gel coat, interlux, rustoleum.....

Depends on how long you want it to last and what kind of shape it is in now.

Some boat paints are best applied with a roller and torn out better than sprayed.

What condition are the sides in now?

Hello

I am new to this fine forum but not to boats.

I would first like to say hello all.

Good luck with the paint job. If you paint cars, the boat should be a piece of cake. Ask your boss or one of your mentors for some tips.

Follow the directions on the paint cans...you would be amazed. If you spray cars spray the boat. Use simalar technology. Epoxy 2 part paints usually hold up the longest but are the most toxic to apply.

A one part paint like brighside is easy to roll on and tip with a foam brush.

Sounds like a fun boat and a worth while project. Post some pics

welcome! just a couple of somewhat important points... most two part urethanes are every bit or more dangereous to apply thamn epoxy based paints and modern two-part polyurethanes nearly always outperform epoxy paints as top coats... hence the reason that they dominate the auto paints applications.

acrylic urethanes like dupont's nason line (ie fulthane) are not quite as bad as many of the higher end two part urethanes like imron and awlgrip and still give great gloss and a very durable finish.

Thanks for the info guys! I think I am just going to use a single stage urethane. Any idea where to get the paint codes?
Thanks again!!

Welcome to iboats Grag..

Just one question..WHY do you want to "paint" this ?

The only thing wrong I see in your pics is that somebody has been putting some kinda wax or "scat" or .. something on the hull..

Ill bet 2 nickels that if you took a buffer to those faded areas you wont even see red on you pad..just some kinda glaze junk on it. YOU would need to to remove this stuff before you prime/paint anyways..

Buff that baby up and save some cash m8.

Re: Need Prep and Paint Advice

Well, it is worst than it looks in the pictures. It has quite a few chips and many scratches. The left side is caulked up pretty bad from years of sunlight exposure.

Like YD said, go after it with a buffer and some coarse compound, if that doesn't do it start sanding. You have nothing to lose.

I assure you Grag the chalk will come out m8..

chips can be repaired with gel.. Spectrum has the color code if you need a close match.

You really dont want to paint this .. trust me..

Ill post some pics of something exactly like your boat that came out sweet with some sanding and polishing.

The only reason I would "paint" a boat like yours would be because the gel as worn too thin to rub out.

Even then I would re-gel it. ( I dont like paints personally ;) ).

Like ondarvr said, you have nothing to loose because your gonna have to sand it anyway for the new paint, so why not hit it with the buffer first? Do it before you buy the paint

Re: Need Prep and Paint Advise

Go to an auto parts store and ask for some 3m Fast Cut and try that with a good variable speed polisher. That is some tough compound that will remove that chalk.

Try a simple 2' x 2' spot in the worst area and then let us know. Harbor freight or northern tool sell the polisher.

Then if you are satisfied YD will help guide you through gel coat matching for the chips

Forgive me but like I said I am new to fiberglass work. Do the make Gel coat in colors that I could use to fill the deep scratches?

Try this ..

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...E3E02LECIE20S4K7_nid=GSFKDG7HK3be9NQK7NZ8TZgl

Dont believe what it says about little mess..this stuff creates the biggest compound mess you will ever use .. oh..and use a dust mask at least lol..

Depending on what crap is on there ( could be a poly self applied coating ) you might not even buff through that..then you have to sand/buff..you will know when you buff your " oxidation " off and your pad does not turn red ..

Spectrum supplies gelcoat for outdated factory gels..

http://www.spectrumcolor.com/default_main.asp

How to repair scratches..Might we start another thread for Title searching reasons ..

Re: Need Prep and Paint Advise

and I thought I was just messy....

I like the superduty 3m compound you linked to, but I actually like aquabuff a lot better. It seems to cut as well (especially the 1000 grit - have to be careful with it. in fact I never wind up using it, only the 2000) but is much easier to clean up.

also, the boat I'm running now looked like grey chalk when I brought it home...

I went so far as 320 on the da before the black w silver metalflake started to look nice again. then all the way to 1200, aquabuff 2000 and finisse it 2 to finish.

I was really surprised how nice it looked when finished.

ps. nice boat!

keepNitReel asked me to post here

Your hull will clean up far better than you can imagine. I am a total amateur though I like to think I learn quickly.

What I would do would be to wash it, wet sand it using straight line motions along the lines of the hull starting with 400 grit (some folks go coarser, but I prefer to do more work and take less gelcoat off) Proceed to 600 1000 grit, 1500 and finally 2000. After the initial sand each successive sanding is much faster. All you are removing are the scratches from the coarser paper. Use a sanding block or a long board wherever possible and always keep fresh paper and lots of water on hand. Wash it off frequently. Gelcoat is tough, but thin.

When you get through with 2000 a high speed buffer (I like a wool pad, but I have heard good things about the foam ones too) will make it shine like new.

I am using bars of jewelry rouge-essentially the same stuff used to polish soft metal. I don't recommend it, but I do use it. There are milder polishes that are slower, but will do a good job. I'm still working on mine and haven't given it the final buff or any wax yet.

here are some before and after pictures

I think painting a boat is a bit like painting a brick house. When you are done it may look great, but you have to expect that one day you will be doing it again. Still if the boat calls for it paint makes sense-I just think your boat could look great with less work that proper paint prep, paint time and finish time and the cost is minimal in comparison, just your time which you were going to spend anyway and some inexpensive supplies.

I've touched up some gelcoat on my boat and it isn't all that hard. I will however defer to those here that have done a lot more of that than I have. Matching colors is an art, but you have painting experience, you'll be able to do just fine.

Re: Need Prep and Paint Advise

I bought my first boat two years ago and had a similar issue. It looked decent from a distance or in pictures but up close it had a lot of deep scratches. I did buff it out once but it chaulked up pretty quickly. So, I decided to paint it. Glad I did because the brown really sukked.

I used bc/cc. On the first coat of clear I mixed in some pearl, and followed it up with two more coats of clear without the pearl so I could wetsand and buff. But I don't think I need to do that.

Here is the result.
