J. Mark thanks for posting those pic's, it's amazing how you got the gel coat to come back to life. I think those pic's will save a few people from doing something that's not needed.

Next question, the aluminum rail that goes around the boat is all banged up. It looks to be just some standard channel. Should I try to fab that or try to refinish what I have? Where can you purchase that?
Thanks!

If your talking about the rub rail then check out page 32 of JCSERCSA thread "pics of work so far", he did a awsome job refinishing his rub rail. Here's a link to it. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=231007&page=32

Ok, Went out and got the 3M rubbing compound. I also called Spectrum and they do not have my color gel coat. They can custom blend it for around $500 a gal! So, without the correct color gel coat to fix the all the bad spots I not sure what to do. Does anyone else sell gel coat?
Thanks!

i think my hull is in pretty good shape, wanted to try the 3m restoring product. basically, i've never used a power buffer. I have a dewalt grinder---is there an attachment for that or is that too many rpms?? what type of buffer is best--foam, cloth, wool, other? thanks for any advice!

I have a makita that works very well. You can get a cheap one at Harbor freight for about $30 that works ok. I find that they don't have a lot of torque.

As far as my boat goes, it is coming along very nicely! I used my DA with 180 to start with and got all the scratches out! I then went to 320, 400, 600. I then buffed with the super duty and then with normal rubbing compound I use on my bc/cc jobs. The boat really looks nice! I was surprised at the thickness of the gel coat. I plan to patch the few bad spots with duraglass on touch up with urethane. I'll post some pictures soon.

And many wonder why I like gel :)

cough..your welcome..cough

btw..for the readers.. 180 grit is kinda coarse to be starting with.. 320 is a good starting point. ( I use 400 on a DA first..and then step down to 320 if needed ).

Im happy things are going good for you without painting m8 :D

I was stopping at 1000 then buffing with 3M Perfect it 3000 and it looked really good. Decided to go 1500 and really makes a difference. Then I used a cheapy Turtle Wax polishing compound on a wool pad and it looks like glass. It was really bad when I started. Neer thought it would turn out how it did. The first pic it is actually damp and still looks dull. The second is after 1500 and Perfect it compound.
