I have a 2301 walk around, my first season was this past summer love the boat- runs great up here on lake superior in northern mich. I have a 225 2001 Evinrude FICHT. I currently have a 3 blade 17 p prop that came on the motor. The problem is that top rpms should be about 5900. However at full throttle my RPMs go up to 6900! Being a novice boater Im not sure if I need to change props so I can run at WOT from time to time? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks DP.

Re: need prop advice for 2301

The 17p prop sounds like the correct one for that motor/boat.
I'm surprised to hear that it's that far over the RPM. My first thought is that the prop is cavitating causing the over rev condition. Might want to check the motor height.

Second thought is that the prop is the wrong diameter. This happened to me several years ago, the stock prop was a 17 pitch but the diameter was 1" to small allowing an over rev condition. Once I had the larger diameter (OD) prop everything was fine.

If all these things check out then a 21 pitch prop needs to be tried to see where the rpms are.
